It's a good read, and some measure of cultural nuance that in the UK it was published as What's The Matter With America?

I hadn't realized that, but it's interesting. Wonder what it signifies that the German version's called Was Ist Mit Kansas Los?

Perhaps a better title would be, "What the matter with everyone who doesn't think exactly like Thomas Frank?"

The Tin Drum, Gunter Grass
I tend to agree that Mr. Grass' "confession comes a bit too late." Will be interesting to reread it.

Fool For Love and Other Plays, Sam Shepard

Essential Dutch Grammar by Henry R. Stern

Such a great, wonderful book! It's fantastic, just like Albert Heijn and zakjen!
“An’ this is the last of Brummy,” he said, leaning on his spade and looking away over the tops of the ragged gums on the distant range.

I like him. Loved it when he called Rachael Ray a "bobblehead."

So do any of the offal/organ meals sound tempting? Tripe, kidney, sweetbreads, intestines, trotters, etc.
On a side note, we did hit one nice restaraunt in Manhattan last March. Appetizer menu had marrow bones and a few pieces of toast for $17.

Just got three books of Amazon and I'm spoilt for choice

Redemption Song -The Definitive Biography Of Joe Strummer

plus two books on Songwriting that I thought may inspire me, but probably won't tell me anything I don't already know:

Heart and Soul - Revealing The Craft Of Songwriting - Chris Bradford
Songwrting - Essential Guide To Form and Structure - Pat Pattison

Any suggestions as to which I should read first?

Heather: read the biography first -- and let us know how you like it. 8) :D

Frances: Here's Tony Bourdain's take on Las Vegas: "You have to love a town where you can both smoke and gamble in a pharmacy."

Derelict81: The Nasty Bits is a collection of short writings. Plenty on food, of course. Have you seen his "No Reservations" show on the Travel Channel? Watching it can make you starving and swear off food at the same time.

Haven't read the book, but I really enjoy the show every Monday night. What a dream job this guy's got. Although I wouldn't want to rely on an interpreter to tell me what I'm eating.

I decided to read the songwriting books first, mainly for inspiration more than anything.
