I've finished "Watership down" and Pat Gilbert's "Passion is a fashion" about the Clash.
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

This was brilliant, thanks for the tip, it made my bank holiday weekend. Especially since Kalle Blomquist was a hero of my youth. :)
Now back to Günter Grass, Peeling the Onion.

What I like most about it is the language he uses, lots of expressions I haven't heard since my granny died many years ago, so it's a bit personal. And I always like Grass' sentences. Besides that, it is more amusing than the subject matter would suggest. But still, it's all about the issue of German guilt in general and his own in particular, so quite heavy going at times. I don't think he does as much obscuring his role in the past - a few lapses aside - as he has been accused of doing, it sounds quite frank and genuinely conscience-probing to me.

Have you read it, Jenny?

My second Stephen King. I may need to read more from him. The Shining was also good, but if Misery is a better representative of the man's talent, then further investigation is required.

His early stuff is best. I read everything up to a few years ago then quit. Most King fans consider The Stand as his all time classic.

while i love the stand i think salem's lot is hbis best

Just finished Ammunition by Galway's own Ken Bruen this morning. I'll need to pick up Cross next so I can get caught up with that series as well.

I just felt like some stress-free reading this week after a horrendous first day in court yesterday.
I love Marian Keyes' writing. My favourite book of hers is; 'Sushi For Beginners'.

I'm still reading this, because i lost it for a while. We have a lot of books & a lot of music in our house. It's quite annoying, i don't know if i'd recommend this one. Interesting premise, but waaaay to pro-american for my liking, and i'm often happy to read something and apply my own analysis. But when Kahaner is discussing how the USA's public international stance on weapons sales doesn't really matter, it's all just bluster and they're really well-intentioned, for example... stuff like this: "[i/]The United States has repeatedly refused to sign agreements that ban the use of land mines although it has not used antipersonnel mines since 1991[/i] I GO FREAKING MAD 'cause it ignores that fact that, of course, American companies are PRODUCED land mines until 1997, and now just use high-tech "smart" landmines. But, as that particular factum might diminish Kahaner's argument that the AK is the most important weapon, it gets obviously purposefully distorted. I tell ya, the whole book is like this...

Blah, crap work, Mr. Kahaner. If you're really interested in the civilian toll of small-arms warfare, you're gonna have to name the USA as one of the guilty parties, no way around it.

The Steel Wave by Jeff Shaara.
Shaara writes historical fiction, history books disguised as novels. This particular book focuses on the lead-up to D-Day, and the invasion itself.

Engrossing fiction story set in a base in Antarctica. I liked the idea of this, because I once applied to go there myself. The descriptive detail is fascinating and leaves you breathless and the imagery she uses makes you breathe the chill air, blink away the stark beauty and feel the breathtaking loneliness and fully able to imagine actually being there with the crew.
