A place to discuss largely non-Pogues related things.

Springsteen & I

Bruce as seen by his fans. Sounds like a strange idea for a movie, but it works. Entertaining and moving stuff.

Wonder how The Pogues & I would work as a movie.

I think Elvis had the idea for that genre. As far as I remember the fan who was in it had a shaved head.

This could well set the precedent for The Pogues & I, I reckon.

Dark Shadows (2012)

Quite good, quite funny, although a few unexpected/explained turns that make you go "huh?" but may refer to the original soap, of which i have only the the vaguest of memories. Definitely humorously referring to the soap opera genre, in general, as well. They have some fun with the times (1972), and an old-fashioned guy's sudden immersion in it, as well, in the form of hippies, pill-popping psychiatrists, and Alice Cooper ("Ugliest Woman I've ever seen"). Once again, Burton, Dep, & Bonham Carter conquer.

Also, I for one am glad to see a return to vampires and other daemons as kind of creepy and gross, instead of sex symbols. Now if we can just get the zombies back to ambling again, instead of being ninjas (which really makes no sense), then all will be well at the end of the world.

Showed the boys this on Saturday:

Image

It was interesting to see:

-Matthew Broderick even younger than Ferris Buler
-Ally Sheedy not all dark 'n goth
-how big all the computers were
-how lax security was then (buying a one-way plane ticket for someone else in another city? Giving tours of a DefCon facility?)

As we thought, we had a lot of 'splainin to do for our 10 and 14 year old boys. We knew we had to talk about days before the internet, long distance phone calls, etc., but the biggest challenge was getting the point across about Mutual Assured Distruction 'n stuff. Lots of discussion following the movie.

The Hideaways (2011)
The Furlong men all cursed strange powers of one sort or another. James' grandfather goes blind for 37 minutes if he even thinks about sex. His dad fries electronic equipment when frightened. James' power is even more terrible, he sucks the life out of anything around him for a wide distance if he is sick and injured.
Strange modern fairy tale that is well worth watching. Love will cure all.

Well, The Breakfast Club has never been a favorite. Judd, Emilio and Ally are like 110 years old combined in it so the high school detention dealio is a little far fetched. I remember Sheedy's they ignore me line. Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall are alright, what's not to like about those two? I guess it's better than the one with Eric Stoltz and the Howard the Duck lady. I'd never noticed the similarities in the poses before.

The scene that freaked me out so that I screamed loud enough for the po po to hear is this one...

DO NOT CLICK UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO SHIT BRICKS AS BRICKS WILL BE SHIT SCARY!!!

I know it's not really scary but it is to me and I don't know how people can watch this stuff, especially in theaters. Great googly mooglies.

Great film with stunningly original, stark and authentic visual imagery, especially the neighborhood children. I borrow it from the library at least once or twice a year. Presently on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJqCieWNtXM

Three and Out(2008)
Trains ,Suicide and Love.Director:Jonathan Gershfield; Writers:Steve Lewis, Tony Owen .Cast; Mackenzie Crook, Colm Meaney.
Worth watching just to see Colm Meaney dance to The Pogues at party.(IISFFGWG).

Doomsday(2008)
A futuristic action thriller where a team of people work to prevent a disaster threatening the future of the human race.
Director:Neil Marshall Writer:Neil Marshall Stars:Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins, Alexander Siddig.
Lost count of how may films I have seen with "Doomsday" in the title but will remember this one as the zombie,Mad max road rage, medival one with some bad one liners.A lot like Glastonbury back in the 90s.

The Hot Potato (2011)
Large lump of weapons grade Uranium - a true Hot Potato! Ray Winstone (Actor), Colm Meaney (Actor), Tim Lewiston .
Really like this film.Ray Winstone is on form and delivers some great jokes. Colm Meaney makes a great Arthur Daley spiff.

Dead in Tombstone(2013)
A gang overruns a small mining town murdering their own leader Guerrero (Trejo) in a cold-blooded power grab. Sentenced to eternity in hell he finds himself confronted by Satan himself(Mickey Rourke).
Director:Roel Reiné Writers:Brendan Cowles, Shane Kuhn Cast:Danny Trejo, Mickey Rourke, Anthony Michael Hall.
Good to see films like this still being made.
