The Mrs and I watched this last night (I read the book a couple years ago):

We wanted to see it now as we just returned from Rome and were in almost all the places where the major scenes took place.
It was really fun to see with that added insight.

A pretty good movie, btw. Not great, but worth your time.

Phil Ochs: Chords of Fame (1984)

A great collection of interviews with his family and contemporaries, including yippies like Abbie Hoffman not just other musicians, and some great performances of his stuff by the likes of Odetta, Oscar Brand, Pete Seeger, Dave Van Ronk, Peter Yarrow... but the whole falls apart for me because they chose to have an actor portray Ochs both acting out scenes from his life and performing songs at a fake gig. Creepy. Still worth watching for the other content, but weird that everything is so well represented except Phil Ochs!

It's on the youtube:

Very interesting. The focus is on his upbringing, stage work and teaching.

Reilly had real grounds for his statement "Well, Eugene O'Neill would never get near this family." There's a missed opportunity in his parents lives that is quite epic, amongst other things.

Reilly's NYC beginning acting classmates included: Jack Albertson, Orson Bean, Shelley Berman, Charles Grodin, Hal Holbrook, Harvey Korman, Frank Langella, Jack Lemmon, Anne Meara, Steve McQueen, Geraldine Page, Jason Robards and Jerry Stiller.

He does a bit about Hal Holbrook's Mark Twain Tonight! that's funny. Hasn't everyone taken their Mom to see that? Which makes the whole new Val Kilmer attempt even weirder. :?

Sweet Sixteen (2002)
Does Mr. Loach make any films that do not leave one feeling melancholy?
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

Yup, "The Angel's Share" (2012), which is great. That's the only one, though.

Saw this last Friday and forgot to post:

It was REALLY good. Forest Whitaker was great and there are plenty of well acted cameos - John Cusack's Nixon is remarkable. Oprah Winfrey was also very good, but my wife said she couldn't stop seeing Oprah instead of her character, Gloria. I didn't have that problem.

Cecil Gaines (Whitaker)'s storyline is mirrored alongside the cultural changes in Amreica's Black community, mostly through the his son, Louis. It's a facinating portrayal of how quickly things can change in a generation.

I recommend this one highly.

I love Forest Whitaker. Anything with Whitaker, Liev Schreiber and Clarence Williams III has got to be good. How's Cuba Gooding, Jr. in this? Ever since I read an article about his childhood as an Orange County motel kid I've liked him a lot more. That's character building stuff.

The pictures of John Cusack and Paul Giamatti on the Brian Wilson biopic set are insane. Really creepy, due strictly to Cusack. He looks like Conan O'Brien. Paul Dano should make an awesome younger Wilson. He'll act circles around that Serendipity guy.

Oprah's too damn old to play Whitaker's wife. Unless they're supposed to be almost a decade apart in age. Could live without seeing her, Robin Williams or Jane Fonda.

Cuba's good. He's a secondary character, but has screen time throughout. Can't miss Oprah, as she's the wife, but the age difference is not apparent and they age well throughout the film. Robin Williams is a credible Eisenhower and is only in the film for a few minutes. Same as Ms. Fonda as Nancy - only a few minutes. Nothing to deter you from seeing it.

Was just watching Basquiat.
Didn't know Fairytale (and Summer in Siam) were bumper songs till, oh one second in.

What an upsetting movie. :(

Benicio Del Toro is awesome. Jeffrey Wright pulls it off by 1/3 of the way through. I didn't realize Sam Rockwell played a small part till the credits, will have to replay that bit.
