Horrible Bosses (2011)

Stumbled upon this last night on cable, don't remember hearing anything about it when it came out, so I had no pre-conceived notions. Pretty funny, laughed a lot. Starred Justin Bateman with two other actors that I am unfamiliar with (Jason Sudekis and Charlie Day)-pretty good chemistry. The best part is the talent in the supporting roles-Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Aniston (actually acting a bit), Jamie Foxx, Bob Newhart and an unrecoginizable Colin Farrell (didn't even know it was him until the credits rolled). But Kevin Spacey just adds so much more to his role, in lesser hands it could have been stale, but he is great here.

Charlie Day is so funny. I haven't seen the Always Sunny huffing episode(s)? yet but he looks hysterical.

Bob Newhart is awesome and I want to see him live. Just watched his records make an appearance on Mad Men when the uptight dude tosses one out of his office. Mad Men's angle. "It's not Lenny Bruce, but it's good," Paul says as a group listens and laughs at the LP in their office. -USA Today

I will see this based on those two alone.

The Machinist. In which Christian Bale loses a scary amount of weight and nearly dies of insomnia.

Good film.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

Good film.

That is a hellish film! Saw 'Right At Your Door' last night...a lesson in how to make a low-budget film that's effective and very watchable.

Can't do it.
What's the one where the guy loses all short term memory? Can't take that one either.
Also had to switch off The Singing Detective because of the burn-like condition of the character.

The Smurfs (2011)

One of the things about being family guy is you get to watch all sorts of kids movies. This can be a mixed blessing, but sometimes you're surprised. Smurfs is not a film i would have picked (despite briefly being a fan when i was little), but my 10 year old insisted. I had low expectations, but i didn't hate it. There was some good making fun of Smurfs content, good Gargmel running around NYC scenes, and enuf slapstick to nearly rupture both my 10 and 17 year olds' spleens with laughter. And at the end of the day, it's hard not to like ANYTHING with Neil Patrick Harris in it.

Just watched this last night. Very enjoyable, more so at the end to learn it was based on/inspired by the true story of Mike Peters/The Alarm a few years back, who also wrote the songs.

Thanks for mentioning it!

Just watched the "Chronicles of Narnia" Triology this weekend:

The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Prince Caspian (2008)
Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)

Altogether not a bad adaptation, and certainly well produced and acted films. The third installment takes a great deal of liberty with Lewis' work, both in streamlining the plot and Hollywood-izing a great deal of the dialogue. Clearly, it needed to be streamlined to fit into a movie, but it left the film feeling rather random at times. "Prince Caspian" ends with a totally unnecessary kiss, again with the Hollywood...

The older BBC series gave a much fuller telling of the complete set of novels, but a guy flopping around in a cheap lion suit hardly gave Aslan the majesty he requires. They are more like plays, and would be a good introduction to younger children, but older children will laugh when Reepicheep the mouse is not significantly smaller than the humans.
Image

(An interesting aside, the BBC Reepicheep was played by Warwick Davis, who appears in the 2008 Prince Caspian as Nikabrik the Dwarf).
