Muppet Treasure Island, 1996.

The 2nd Muppet film directed by "newcomer" Brian Henson, this film was produced by Frank Oz with screenplay by longtime Henson team members Jerry Juhl, which all serves to keep that Muppet magic.

Like other Muppet productions, it has the obligatory frog/pig love story, and adds a tribe of natives, but otherwise stays fairly true to Stevenson's story, esp. with attention to the morally ambiguous nature of Long John Silver (played with eye-winking gusto by Tim Curry) & Jim Hawkins' relationship with him. This is unusual fare for a children's story - then & now - and is the sort thing that the best Henson productions have always specialized in - a bit more depth in the story, and lots of humour aimed at the adults in the crowd as well as the kids.

This one has held up well.

Red State (2011), directed by Kevin Smith

How did i miss this at the time? While he sometimes disappoints, he always tries to do what HE wants, and that's why i'm a fan of Kevin Smith, right from Clerks on.

A great examination of the opposing parallels of the terror of Christian religious extremism in America, the terror of The State, and the rest of us caught shivering in between hoping just to survive everybody else's wars. Also a great shoot-em-up flick if that's what you love. And anything with John Goodman is good in my book.

Excellent movie, with just the right amount of scariness, according to my girls. It also features a glorious mullet sported by young Jim Hawkins. A mullet always adds to the pleasure of a movie, imo.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

The Angel's Share (2012) - Ken Loach.

Ken Loach's films mostly explore class, crime/the criminal justice system, mentors, found families, struggle, failure, and redemption. They are wonderful, beautiful, and mostly miserably depressing.

His 2012 film "The Angel's Share" is no different, focusing on a group of people who meet through court-ordered community service. It also involves the most amazing working class whiskey club ever, and for once in his life, Ken gave us a happy ending. If you can handle the Glaswegian accent without subtitles, this may be your favorite film of the year.

The copy I saw was a "shite" copy.cough cough shh........ That said the film is worth the watch . Nothing like the same " Lone Ranger" of youth but funny all the same.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)

Not exactly a "feel good" movie. I'm a big Philip Seymour Hoffman fan so I did enjoy the movie even though it left me needing hugs from my children.
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save
