In Bruges. A life-affirming film about love, honour and thieving murderers. I adored it.

A fairy is a tiny being with wings that looks like a person but possesses powers of magic and enchantment. According to legend, fairies can change the weather, alter aspects of nature and bestow magical gifts such as intelligence and plenty. They can also lure humans to their islands where all is happiness and no one ages or gets sick...however, once brought to these mystical places, there is no escape. Join filmmaker John Walker on a quirky and compelling journey through Ireland, England, Scotland and Cape Breton in search of the child's imagination in a rational world. This unique look into the realm of fantasy traces the popular fascination with fairies and is vividly brought to life with gorgeous cinematography and an enchanting soundtrack

Watched Carmen last night, one of two DVD's that I borrowed off my mum (the other being The Barber Of Seville which we watched a few weeks ago).

Both are Glyndebourne productions and the quality of the DVD's was a bit ropey to say the least.

Having said that I really enjoyed both stories and the music (the first time I've seen either of them I'm ashamed to say) and am really looking forward now to seeing Carmen on the stage properly in December.

Oh, i've been meaning to check this show out, and i'll admit it's purely because one of my favourite local caustic journalists is a fan, and i understand Steve Earle is on this season, so that's two good recommendations. How do you like it?

I just watched Willow with my 5-year old, she loved it. "Oh no!", she keeps saying, "There's a PECK, pointing an acorn at me!" The first date i ever went on, we went and saw Willow.

The Wire is brilliant. It may even be the best thing ever done on television. Steve Earle acts in the first season. Season Three is extraordinary, not least because of the phantasmagorical Hamsterdam plonked down in the middle of Baltimore. The first episode of this season also has, no contest, the best Irish wake scene ever filmed. I can say no more about this series. You deserve your own epiphanies.

David Simon and George Pelicanos came to see us in Washington DC in March.

I've been wanting to see The Wire for ages, and had a very pleasant surprise yesterday when the first three series turned up in the post -- apparently I'd entered a competition before Christmas to win them, which I'd forgotten all about it. The organisers had had problems with the distributors, hence why it took so long to arrive. But I'm so looking forward to watching it. David Simon created the fabulous Homicide: Life on the Street, which is one of the best cop shows on TV. And the book it derived from is well worth reading as well.
