Watching HBO's "The Leftovers" (Season 1).
After having watched both "serious", Christian-produced projects (like "Left Behind") and comedic ones ("Rapture Palooza" and "This Is The End"), it is interesting to watch a secular drama about life in a small American town a few years after what might or might not have been the rapture: the sudden unexplained disappearance of an apparently random 2% of the world's population. Based on a book of the same name by Tom Perrotta, who is involved as co-creator, writer, and producer,
Less extreme dystopia than, say, The Walking Dead, with (so far) a mere hint of the supernatural, society still chugs on, but with more cults, feral dogs, despair and hopeless teens than before. The awful American TV trope of the single father* is used here, but in a refreshing twist, local Police chief Kevin Garvey, Jr totally does not have it together as a parent or know what he's doing at all. Well written, superbly acted by a cast including Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler and Carrie Coon give the pain and struggle of social disruption, if not actual disintegration, real life.
Season two has just finished airing, and the network has confirmed a thrid and final season, which also means the story will resolve rather than devolve into an ongoing soap opera, like too many great shows.
*Seriously, if there's one over-represented minority on TV let's be clear: it's single dads, who barely exist in the real world, have dominated family-themed TV for decades. http://www.tvdads.com/tvdshowmenu.shtml
