LOVE/HATE (Season 3, RTE 2012)
I've been a noisy fan of this show since the outset. It is undeniably rooted in authentic Dublin gangland, a milieu which, in such a compact metropolis as Dublin, can often feel in the real world that it is encroaching into the less volatile, somewhat safer middle class capital city while still remaining aloof, pretty much unknowable, governed by impenetrable codes and morals. There's nothing sentimental or trite about Stuart Carolan's characters and they are portrayed by the finest of Ireland's powerful current generation of acting talent, people like Killian Scott, Charlie Murphy and Tom Vaughan Lawlor. Indeed, one of the inevitable downsides of a show that wastes characters as this does, is having to say goodbye to people like Aidan Gillen, Aaron Monaghan and, this season, Robert Sheehan.
This season, the Continuity IRA have been "taxing" the gang on their drug imports and, much worse, making the grave error of raping one of their girlfriends. It's worth noting that LOVE/HATE is not marooned on some cable channel as it would be in the USA. This is network TV. So, all good, but I feel some carping is in order anyway. For a show so well written, some of the dialogue is occasionally downright clunky and a good script editor could trim some repetition.
