What TV Show Are You Watching Or Watch Today

Post Fri Mar 09, 2012 9:48 pm

Okay, it is Friday afternoon, I have done enough work for the week. Thought it would be good to seperate the TV shows out from the Movie thread and create a new thread.

Anyways, I just started watching the Big Bang Theory. Definitely hooked. The good thing about coming to the party late, is pretty much every show is new to me and it seems this is syndicated everywhere now.

Borgen (Season One) (Danish TV, 2010)

The very welcome renaissance in television drama initiated by American cable TV about 10 years ago continues to blossom elsewhere as broadcasters the world over come to the astounding realisation that when you give the viewers intelligent, quality drama, they will watch it in their millions and then go buy the box set. It seems like a simple enough formula but, in the surfeit of bullshit and eejitry that has substituted for television in that decade, it could so easily have gotten lost. Nobody remembers now, but The Wire wasn't actually a hit show for most of its run. It was a real slow burn sustained almost exclusively by HBO's righteous belief in David Simon's vision. A national network would almost certainly have pulled it halfway through the first season.

DR, Denmark's national broadcaster, has had an especially good run of work which has even managed to debunk the old "English language viewers are resistant to subtitles" argument and drawn people in droves to Wallander, The Killing and now Borgen. Borgen is "the castle", the building where all branches of the Danish government are based and if that makes this show seem like a Danish version of The West Wing, well, that doesn't quite do it justice. Much as I loved The West Wing, and much as its Nordic counterpart is clearly inspired by much that was admirable in the characterisations, storylines and dramatic tropes of its model, right down to the famous "walk with me" shooting angles, which gave Aaron Sorkin's show an impression of urgency, of constant motion, Borgen is in many ways more interesting. Perhaps Pilou Asbæk's spin doctor Kasper Juul is troubled in a way that owes more to the elusive psychological complexity of Mad Men, but it makes him a welcome few shades darker than Rob Lowe's equivalent. And Sidse Babett Knudsen as Denmark's first female prime minister Birgitte Nyborg almost erases memories of those lipgloss nightmares that were Geena Davis as the Commander In Chief.

Perhaps there's a touch of the "bicycling monarchy" about Borgen but that only adds to its verisimilitude. Inevitably, you think, a Danish PM is not subject to the same security issues as an American president, but then you remember those Mohammed cartoons and other issues that have placed Denmark in the centre of recent European politics. Moreover, as we see in a fascinating episode about rendition flights landing in Greenland, a country with a post-colonial relationship with Denmark, itself a state with a compromised relationship with the USA and the CIA, just like the Republic of Ireland, and you get a glimpse of just how complicated these things become even in the matter of small nations, perhaps especially in the matter of small nations. The Danish PM's diplomatic visit to Greenland to smooth feathers after the rendition business is exposed is one of the most extraordinary pieces of television drama I've seen lately, and not just because it affords us a rare opportunity to see some fine Inuit actors at work.

And the subtitles? Well, they never interfered with my enjoyment of The Wire!!

Here are a few I'm certainly GOING to watch...

http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/immaculate- ... and-fallon

Tom Waits is trotting out his songs from "Bad As Me" for the first time since the album release with a couple of performances lined up on national television.

The veteran songwriter head to the "Late Show With David Letterman" on April 24 and to "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" the next night on April 25. He'll be sitting down for an interview with each, too, which might prove to be just as entertaining as the songs themselves.

He's visited with Letterman before, but this will be a first for "Fallon"; considering that host's rivalries, I'd expect a stop-off at "The Colbert Report," or maybe just a return to "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart.

Waits has yet to announce any tour dates behind "Bad As Me," but this may signal that organizing may just be ramping up for a trek. He only played eight shows in support of his 2006 album "Orphans," then took up a much more complete itinerary two years later. He's known to play with the dates surrounding his album releases, and in a series of stops that don't always land in major cities.

These performances may also answer the question of: if Waits were to tour, what cracker-jack band would he take with him? During the 2008 Glitter and Doom tour, it was with backers like Vincent Henry on woodwinds, his son Casey Waits on drums, Omar Torrez on guitar/banjo, Patrick Warren on keyboard and Seth Ford-Young on bass. On this record, Casey was all over the thing and Warren was on half; Ford-Young, Henry and Torrez are nowhere to be found; andclassic collaborators like Marc Ribot and special guests like Keith Richards and Flea abounded.

This is all speculation of course. Waits may be already hard at work on something else as soon as the cameras hit "stop."
Disclaimer: These are my opinions and not fact as realised in these here United States, lest I give my friends the idea that everyone thinks like me.

He's also in the new Martin McDonagh movie Seven Psychopaths, currently editing in London.

Community - this show has struggled mightily with ratings but has a very dedicated following and I think it is hilarious. It's about a study group in community college and each episode generally is a send up of another movie or tv show. I guess people can struggle to follow some of the humor if it's mocking another show they have not seen, but I've have not seen most of what they make fun of and it has not been a problem for me. it took a little while to find it's groove in the beginning but I think it is the funniest show on US tv right now.

Had been watching an outlandish comedy called "Republican Primaries" whose last episode recently aired. However, I hear there is a sequel in the making...
