Bruce Springsteen: The River

"Now I just act like I don't remember
Mary acts like she don't care..." 8)

Just a brilliant song about life, and love, and family, and growing old, and the economy...

A quick burst of the Boss, before settling down for a Pogues marathon, doubtless. Traditionally, The Pogues are usually played non-stop in the firehazard house over the Christmas hols. :)

I got out an album I've neglected for years - John Prine's "Sweet Revenge", from 1973. Brilliant. Favorites are "Grandpa Was A Carpenter", "The Accident", "Please Don't Bury Me" - aw, the whole thing is great.

My favorite John Prine tunes are from this album (I love those three songs, too) and his prior releases: "John Prine" and "Diamonds in the Rough". My most treasured of the three is his first, though. I have all three on vinyl and the covers are lovingly worn.

I just learned that Mr. Prine is to be performing in my vicinity in March (!) and I'm going to see what I can do to be there. I've seen him three times, the last just after the start of the war in Iraq and his "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore" was much in favor with the crowd. I think John Prine is woefully underappreciated for his songwriting.

I wouldn't say underappreciated as much as unrecognized.
I have tickets to see him this spring. My first time - really looking forward to it.

Lucky you... I've only been lucky enough to catch him once, but John Prine puts on a brilliant live show. 8) :)

Yes, you are right about my choice of words.

I have loved each of the John Prine shows. I am unsure about his current tour, but the other times I saw him, it was just him alone on stage and it was wonderful!

I don't think of John Prine as unrecognized - he was one of many "new Dylans" that the 70s produced, after all. So I guess he's more acccurately "forgotten".

I'd really love to see him sometime. I played him for my Sweetheart last night, and didn't realize she wasn't completely aware of how great he is - she was born 5 years after "Sweet Revenge" came out, whereas I was in high school (most days with an illegal smile) so his first few albums resonated for me. And still do, it turns out.

After a few songs she said "I really like this," and then she said "he sounds like a cross between Bob Dylan and Steve Earle!" and I couldn't really argue with that.

"Sweet Revenge" is my favorite not just because of the great songs, but also the great musicianship - I really only recognize Steve Goodman's and David Brigg's names, but everyone is great.
