Few people realise that this song is about a Bruce Dickinson family holiday in the Cotswolds.

and after that came "The number of the beast"

And we did not catch the whale, brave boys
And we did not catch the whale"

The Pogues: Bottle Of Smoke

Cos it's Friday. Still one of the best getting-in-the-mood-for-the-weekend songs ever. 8)

"Never Get Out Of This World Alive" by Hank Williams. The plum in the batch of hillbilly 78s I got today. It's the song he had on the charts when he died.

The other gem I got is the Delmore Brothers' "Brown's Ferry Blues":

Image

Brown's Ferry Blues

Hard luck poppa counting his toes
You can smell his feet wherever he goes
Lord Lord. got those Brown's Ferry Blues
Hard luck poppa can't do his stuff
Trouble with him he's been too rough
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues.

Two old maids a-sitting in the sand
Each one wishing that the other was a man
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues
Two old maids done lost their style
If you want to be lucky you got to smile
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues.

Early to bed and early to rise
And your girl goes out with other guys
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues
If you don't believe me try it yourself
Well I tried it and I got left
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues.

Hard luck poppa standing in the rain
If the world was corn he couldn't buy grain
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues
His knees knock together but he's raring to go
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues.

I got a gal in Cumberland Gap
she's got a boy that calls me 'Pap'
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues
I don't smoke and I don't chew
and I don't go with the girls that do
Lord Lord got those Brown's Ferry Blues.

Josh Ritter: Kathleen

Saw Mr Ritter last night, he was brilliant. Unfortunately he was only the support act, and the main band were interminably booooooooring.

I've seen Josh Ritter live a few times with The Frames. Kathleen & Man Burning are good tunes. I'm sure there's more I just can't think of them. Who were the main band?

It was Gomez. Avoid like the plague. Didn't mean to stay for them, but got sort of stuck, as well as getting thoroughly bruised. Anyway, very boring.
