To my horror, I just watched a youtube-type video from 1985, with a bunch of Swedish hair-metal people calling themselves "Metal Aid" and singing "Give a Helping Hand."

Lots of teased hair, spandex pants and overwrought singing.

The säckpipa is awesome. Who knew the Swedes had their own bagpipe?

most european territories had bagpipes, tho you mostly just hear scottish highland pipes & irish uiellien (sp?) pipes these days. but france, romania, and bulgaria, just off the top of my head, all still have living folk bagpipe traditions.

and most bagpipes, thankfully, are not as huge and loud and full of drones as scottish highland bagpipes. i mean, it's all fine & well if you're trying to be heard over a loud electirc band like the reel mackenzies or dropkick murphys, but otherwise the ideal listening position for higland pipes is, like, over the next hill (which is, i suspect, the use for which they developed, so lonely shepherds could play to one another).

It's spelled - Uilleann.

They are scary boots, too! To be honest, Shaz, I wouldn't fancy getting into a fight with Ms Carthy.
