Yeah, they can be, Walshy. It's a good way of catching up with books. But it's worth choosing carefully.
Choose a book you want to read/hear (that's a bit obvious really).
If you can, find a version that's read by someone good, someone whose voice you like to listen to.
And it's worth checking reviews before you buy. :)

(I've been involved in the production of one or two of these things - but nothing anyone here would probably want to listen to!)

Good song.

When I think of Damo I normally think of Paddy Rolling Clone - Hows your spanish mate? Fitting in alright I hope!

Hey Walshy, back in work today (only have broadband in work hence intermittent postings - I read everything though!!!) I think you have me mixed up with someone else re the Spanish. Little old me lives in Ireland. Actually going to see Damo in concert tonight in Carlow. Should be the usual good craic.

Could you do the same for my mum? She's partially sighted and is always 'reading' audio books.

If you are blind or illiterate, it's a great thing to have. If not, read the book! Those audio books remind me of when my grade school teacher would read a book aloud to the class. Those were the times when I would sneak in a nap. Yes! I have a few, but having the actual book is better. With a book, you can go back to a page or chapter for reference a whole lot easier . Besides, some of those readers sound boring-- a great sleeping aid.

Well, I know what you're saying, Behan, and nothing beats having a book and reading it for yourself. It's what I'd always do by preference.
But some of those audiobooks are high quality. if you have a reader who appreciates the text, or maybe an author who's capable of reading their own text out loud in an entertaining way, it can actually add something to the book. But it's worth finding out about the quality before you buy. Unless, as you say, you're seeking a cure for insomnia.

It wasn't because I'm too lazy to read at home.. I was thinking of it as a change from listening to tunes on the way to work. I mean listen to some great comedies too and hear some auto's that I wouldn't ordinarily do.

It's just I find and I don't know if anyone else will agree.. but I think you get bored of tunes all too easy,.. in fact it was Michaelo who pointed this out to me.. or it could of been someone else. Obviously I could listen to The Pogues all the time,. that goes without saying. But, for example some tunes that I used to love like.. Billy Bragg's stuff :-| has grown a bit boring on me... :-|

The constant listening on my mp3 is killing my love for music! Or alternatively making me listen to other genres that I perhaps ordinary wouldn't of listened to like Country & Western. <---- this is good!

Anyway that's why I was wondering about audio books.

Because bringing a book on the tube is a tad annoying esp if you're hopping off buses and swapping lines.. etc.

Ok, have I explained myself enough? :) :)

Yeah, Walshy, that all makes perfect sense.

Sometimes you just need a change from music. And almost any music can get a bit over-familiar if you listen to it constantly ('tis the curse of the iPod!). Apart from the Pogues, of course.

Trying out new music, experimenting with different genres, is a great thing to do, and you can discover new favourites that way.

But there really are some good audiobooks out there. Ok, there are some shoddy shockers, too, but good 'uns are worth seeking out. Although beware of listening to comedy on the tube - if you start laughing out loud, people may think you're a nutter. :)

I tend to read Sue Arnold's column on audiobooks. She has some great recommendations and always comments on the quality of the reader as well. She also sticks in my mind because she advocates cannabis as improving her eyesight! Seriously.

And so I won't get told off for straying: warblefly - The bonnie ship the diamond

Nutter? Nah, they'd just be jealous of you enjoying yourself, Walshy. Laugh away if you want to. :)
