What blew me away was his band - apparently the same group all these years - who can play in any genre, switching track-by-track. Amazing. Weird Al had more costume changes than Stevie Nicks. WAS I NOT ENTERTAINED? I was.

His parents both passed away from Carbon Monoxide poisoning in a town that I once lived in. Which is terrible.

Kris Kristofferson, Melissa Manchester, Tony Hawk, Dave Mustaine and the Magnum P.I. guy either lived in the same town or in the wealthier, neighboring one. Tori Spelling filmed a reality show there that was fake as fuck and seems to be completely unavailable to view. What a loss.

The only famous resident I ever saw, I believe, was Mustaine blasting the Sweet from an American sports car. Though Hawk was seated beside us at a David Spade stand up, and my little family members were thrilled when Spade called Hawk and his family to the stage leaving the entire row for them to lay down. :D Though I have manners and taught them that it is not proper etiquette to lay down across good seats, LOL. They’ve certainly experienced plenty of nosebleed seats as well, also courtesy of me.

One of the kids was a huge George Carlin fan, who we saw at the same venue as Spade, not long before he passed away. Weird the stuff kids get into, completely on their own.

"After the Rain" - The Skatalites
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSLNZ28EMfg

First track on their first* reunion album, 1984's Return of the Big Guns. That whole album is one of my early morning at-work playlists. Sets a nice mood. Featuring most the original band except keyboardist Jackie Mittoo, trumpet man Dizzy Moore. The late Don Drummond is present in the form of his songs, several of which were arranged for the album by Tommy McCook from Drummond's original charts.

* The first one that was released, anyway. Allegedly there was a full album - The Big Guns - recorded in '79 for Island, but unreleased after a disagreement between Tommy McCook and Chris Blackwell. Another album was recorded in 1983, this time led by Jackie Mittoo, but that album was abandoned** mostly-completed after some conflict with Mittoo. So much drama! This probably explains why Mittoo is not present on the following year's Return of the Big Guns, In fact, despite having reunited sporadically from 1983 the only documents of the original (minus Drummond) lineup are the live albums Live at Sunsplash and Stretching Out, although the latter is technically a bootleg. Jackie rejoined the group in 1989, but no recording occurred before his death the following year. Jah Jerry and Dizzy both retired from the group before they starting recording again in earnest.

** Nine finished tracks were eventually released in 2007 as Rolling Steady: The 1983 Music Mountain Sessions, another two tracks apparently had no horn parts recorded. Guess I should give that a listen, but without Drummond's contribution, it's not really the emotionally fulfilling swang song for the group I wish existed.

Ooh that's so good! I hadn't listened to that album since it first came out. I don't know what I've been thinking!

Crying Time - Brenda Holloway

I'm very pleased to have recently found this on a 45, not sure of the provenance / legality of the release to be fair, but it's a belter!

"The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise" - Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli. A song about the end of WWI, it probably seemed fitting material when the pair reunited post WWII after a 7 year separation.

From their last recordings together (Italy, 1949). Interesting in that this track, and the recording session in general, shows a lot more bop influence than their earlier work, perhaps the beginning of the post-WWII cultural domination of America.

Time Of The Preacher (Willie Nelson) - Johnny Cash, with John Carter Cash (12 string gtr), Kim Thayil (electric gtr), Krist Novoselic (bass), Sean Kinney (drums). As epic as it sounds like it should be.

Actually the whole "Twisted Willie" album is pretty great, Supersuckers with Willie Nelson on "Bloody Mary Morning" is another highlight.

I saw that dude standing around on the street by himself in my old neighborhood once. He was near an independent record store where I once bought 2 Nipple Erectors t-shirts.

I would much rather see him loitering around than a Foo Fighter (except Pat Smear).

It was across the street from a different independent record store where (under glass) there was a Polaroid picture of Nirvana doing an in-store, before they were the biggest band in the world. The funny thing about the picture is my former apartment manager was standing behind them in the shot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YJSHi93a4A

He was an overwrought gentleman who ran the historic building like a freak show. Cool enough, but high-strung AF.

Saw him (Novoselic) on the same block as the actor who played the pizza delivery guy in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I just thought to myself, that’s the dude (Novoselic) who conked himself in the head with his guitar.

Rob Halford used to live around there and recorded an album in the penthouse of an amazing hotel on the same street (formerly owned by actor Jackie Coogan) but I never saw him or I’da sung Breakin’ the Law a’la Beavis and Butthead. So did Ace Frehley, much later.

Anyways...

Nice one! That's Marcy Levy, later of Shakespear's Sister, on the duet. And while i'm not really a Clapton fan, Slowhand used to get a lot of play in my house, and that's her on "The Core" (which I do love) and "Lay Down Sally", both of which she co-wrote.
