A place to discuss largely non-Pogues related things.

Low D wrote:Haha yes. I bought the soundtrack he did for "If I Could Read The Sky" because Storm (Tom McManamon & James McNally) are on it, and was surprised at the mellow new age sound of any project that involved McManamon. He was wasted! McNally was lest of a surprise, what with whistles and low whistles and all.

I saw them ("Storm") open for the Pogues way back in 1991. I loved them at the time, but I was 20 and also very probably drunk. I then spent some number of years trying to find stuff by them and was sorely saddened to discover that there was some wanker hair-rock band that went by the same name, so I was never able to find anything.

I'm not surprised to learn that McNally is all new-agey flutes and stuff (I mean - he's a flute player. What're you gonna do?). But McManamon? Somehow that really surprises me.

Song: Working in a Coalmine
Artist: DEVO

These guys will NEVER not be cool. I don't care that they declared that they were Through Being Cool. They're cool, dammit.

In the discogs database they are #120 of like 150 groups named Storm
https://www.discogs.com/artist/4759714-Storm-120
Their EP is very rock, and the album they did with the bagpipe player is very symphonic rock. I understand there is a cassette but I've never found it, just that dang hair metal band!

I think there was some "Celtic Rock" style band too, now that I think of it. Bastards.

Song: What Are You Afraid Of (King Britt Mix)
Artist: West Indian Girl

Geeze these guys are wankers. The backing track is reasonable for early-2000s EDM, but the main singer dude is just whiny and terrible. The backing vox is this ear-piercing keening. Ugh. Terrible.

Just checked, the database is up to 163 separate artists named "Storm". Plus 1 "Störm"

Currently listening to Van Halen i: "Runnin' with the Devil" / "Eruption" / "You Really Got Me" / "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" / "I'm the One"

Producer Ted Templeman deserves some real credit on the early VH albums, there's a raw, stripped-down production that gives this music some edge, not unlike Joy Division or other early New Wave acts. A similar effect to what Max Norman acheived on Ozzy's first two solo albums. These efforts have aged so much better than so much other early 80s hard rock.

Song: Rock Me
Artist: Pills

From the Run Lola Run soundtrack. There is never a time that DJ Shuffle plays a track from this soundtrack and I don't love it. [thump thump thump]

The last time we were at the O2 in London (for Mr Cave and the Seeds), one of the hazardettes was approached by a girl who asked her, "Are you Storm?" And wouldn't take no for an answer. She was desperate to get a selfie with her. It seems she had mistaken her for an actress of that name. Ok, she did (like the actress) at the time have red hair... there are a whole lotta Storms out there.

Great film. Which reminds me it's time I watched it again.

They’re great.
Loved them.

Was trying to find a picture of them in San Diego with the Pogues but only found this:

I cannot wrap my head around a Pearl Jam / Pogues fan. What the fuckity fuck.

I thought the Pogues seemed stoned that night, personally. Just different. Great, of course. :) But what the hell do I know? Maybe I was wigging because they were five blocks from my apartment.

I have photos of them supporting the Pogues from L.A. New York, and Orange County (I think. Wait. Did they support the Pogues at Orange County?).

I should probably spend some effort getting the various photo galleries going again so I can link off to things like this.

It says Ted Leo and WEW?

Somebody was bent and posted about the band’s late start and a wrinkled shirt, right?

The Anaheim House of Blues is something all right.
