A place to discuss largely non-Pogues related things.

The other day DJ Shuffle put on some Galactic. I don't know why, but my immediate thought was "Frances would enjoy this. I need to remember to mention it."

So here you go - Frances, I think you'd enjoy Galactic. If you're unfamiliar with them, they're a New Orleans based funk/hip-hop/jazz (sometimes) group. A lot of instrumental work, and a lot of local New Orleans guest vocalists.

(I also believe other people would enjoy them, so feel free to seek them out even you are not Frances.)

I like the first song, it reminds me of a track on Miles Davis' On The Corner. Which ,to be honest, is the only jazz album I've ever considered buying and, of course, stupidly expensive and apparently not representative of his work or well thought of by purists. Anyways...

I don't think I'm a Jazz person. I love Ella Fitzgerald but that's about it.

Can't even really isolate particular instruments in music, just hear the whole thing. Unless it's obvious, like a whistle or boring electric guitar or drum solo.

Ah, well.

Welp, you tried. I've been wrong before.

I was thinking more of the Ya Ka May album, but it's the kind of thing that either grabs you or doesn't.

So, we were just in Seattle for a few days, and while there went to the Museum of Popular Culture (founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2000 as the Experience Music Project). Among a large collection of fancy and historic guitars, there is an unremarkable 1937 Martin acoustic scratched and battered all to hell (particularly the back). This, of course, is a sign of a guitar well travelled & put to constant use. I suppose i don't have to tell you who this particular instrument belonged to...

... but if there's any doubt, look closely and you can see the inscription:

Artist: The Pogues
Song: Streets of Sorrow / Birmingham Six (album version)

I don't think I've heard this in about a year. It's a damn fine song from a damn fine album. I should go listen to the whole album again with the volume turned up really loud.

Update: Fixed a silly typo, 'cause dammit, that kind of thing shall not stand!

Saw this being done live last night, Mr Walbourne in fine form. I'm imagining Shane singing this song now.
