False Lights: Crossing the Bar

Good luck to all friends and crewmates over there on the East Coast, across the broad Atlantic. Stay safe, folks.

What's that, you want a version with Canadian towns? Why, naturally the late great Stompin' Tom Connors did a great one, on the legendary "Live At The Horseshoe Hotel" album.

Ended up getting 33 inches of snow this past blizzard. After the Super Bowl, another 15-18 expected in my town!

I did some research on this song. It was originally done by an Aussie songwriter and then Hank Snow did the first North American version using Canadian towns. Just seems like a real fun song to put together.

I have to check out Stompin' Tom Connors. As a huge hockey fan, I have been late checking him out, understand he has a huge cult following and was beloved by hockey fans in Canada.

The best thing about Tom was his sincerity, but that also means he did a lot of plain old hokey stuff. "Live At The Horseshoe" is a great album (and film: Stompin' Tom Connors - Live at the Horseshoe Tavern: http://youtu.be/mCSEUWGcr2s), along with the "A Proud Canadian" collection is a good place to start. Lemme know if you can't find 'em.

Thanks for the history on "I've Been everywhere", I think I remember the Hank Snow version from the county radio station my Dad used to tune into in the 70s, it does sound written for him! It's definately a song for somebody from a big country, for sure.

Both Charlie on the MTA (Kingsman Trio) or Skinhead on the MBTA by the DKMs

Well, after a week where Boston got anywhere from 3 Ft to 5Ft of snow, the MBTA (Boston's Public Transit) is experiencing massive failures today. One of my workers emailed me at 9:25AM to say he was stuck on the Orange Line. It is now 1:55PM, FOUR and a Half hours later and still no sign of him! Yup, we are ready to host the Olympics!!

Did he ever return?
No he never returned
And his fate is still unlearn'd
He may ride forever
'neath the streets of Boston
He's the man who never returned.
