What Song are you listening to?

Yes, I think they do feature in that programme - or at least John Spiers and Jon Boden, the two main names behind the band (who are involved in much else in the "folk scene" too). Bellowhead are a bit of an acquired taste maybe, they do some interesting variations on the folky tradition... They've got a new album out that I'm still waiting to hear. Very entertaining live, though.

Ah, I've got to listen to them now. Bellowhead: Prickle-eye Bush. Off their EP.

Ok, I'm most likely confusing them with a rattling rolling band which includes Morris Dancers with shards of steel. They are adjacent to them on the Folk Britannia line up. Fascinating to see the Shillelagh Sisters after all these years.

Definitely an acquired taste! I was sure I'd like Bellowhead, but couldn't even get to the end of the EP. They made my teeth hurt

Bought the Spiers and Boden album and thought it was OK without lighting my fire, so to speak. I know lots of people who disagree with me!

The Folk Britannia programme has been very interesting and I went and ordered an Ann Briggs album on the basis of it (not usually the kind of folk I listen to).

I do like the EP, but it's not as good as they are live. So, to be honest, I'm not sure whether I'd listen to them if I hadn't seen them perform, if you know what I mean. It's certainly a different style, a sort of mix of trad folk and other elements, with definite tinges of Kurt Weill... :wink:

And Squeezy Spiers and Jon Boden turn up in so many different folky guises, and with a variety of different people. Last time I saw them was in Eliza Carthy's band, The Ratcatchers, I think...

I know a few people have said they're much better live. I think I was kind of hyped up to like them, having liked Home Service (blast from the past!) with their mix of folk and brass. But there seemed to be too much going on in Bellowhead for me.

Ahem. Eliza Carthy. I'd cross the M5 in rush hour to avoid having to listen to her :lol:
