Song: Soldering
Artist: The Starlites

I keep looking at the name and thinking "Soldering?" Turns out it's Jamaican slang for bumping uglies. Had no idea.

Song: Japan
Artist: Pharoah Sanders

I always find this track really soothing.

I used to listen to the Pogues' live cover while taking the limousine-bus from Narita into Tokyo, and am always pleased that that cover led me to the original. I enjoy them both quite a lot for reasons I just can't find the right words to express.

Still Is Still Moving To Me - Willie Nelson

It's nice to see a live performance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5HAoZgr308

but the original is actually pretty bad-ass
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBxzZspGYz8

Although the '93 Farm Aid vid is pretty rocking:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5HAoZgr308

This is Willie's greatest song, there's a reason it's been covered by artists as diverse as Toots Hibbert and Jello Biafra. His greatest song. I will die on this hill.

Song: The Flat Earth
Artist: Thomas Dolby

Teenager-me went through a Thomas Dolby phase. In hind-site I don't think his work warranted that amount of attention, but I still find this song charming. Also "She Blinded Me (with Science)". 'Cause that's just a wildly entertaining song.

Followed by:

Song: Birds Fly
Artist: They Might Be Giants

Talk about a hit-or-miss band. At times their de3dication to being in-on-the-joke can get wearying, but at least they're far more clever that Weird Al's writing. Though Weird Al has never aspired to be anything other than a jokester who has, miraculously, built a career from it.

Uh.
No.
Weird Al constructs parody songs within the framework and chorus of others work.
Like 500 of them.
Very successfully.

I have a sibling who was/is a journalist/editor who constructed an entire sports article to say “____________ is an asshole.” If you read the first letter of each sentence from top to bottom.

Some people gots it some people don’t.

Weird Al should play the Super Bowl halftime show.

Some littles in my family went to see Weird Al live and one of the parents called to check on their pets that I was sitting. They told me they had to get off the phone because “Weird Al was hitting the stage.” LMAO. They said he was great.

I’m gonna declare that Weird Al is 100% better than the Decemberists live who will make you want to die with their nasal oceanic songs and tween dance circles and playing dead on stage.

I stupidly missed seeing Prince at his residency in Vegas to take a realative to the Decemberists. Like, WTF? I don’t regret treating the family member, I regret being bored out of my brain watching/hearing that dumpster fire on stage. It suuuuuucked.

Anyone that can create a quality parody of R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet is a freaking genius.

Apparently he played Ted Nugent on Reno 911. It just gets better.

There’s only one of these two that I can stand and it’s not the weird looking one.

Meh.

I'm sure he puts on an awesome show, and god bless him for it. And he seems to be someone that has an amusing sense of humor. I loved the hell out him when I was 13.

What amazes me, and maybe didn't come through well in my prior post, is that he's managed to make a career out of being a parody comedy act. Generally speaking these don't last more than a few years, let alone decades. He's found his niche and managed to make a living at it, all while still keeping his tongue firmly in his cheek. Good for him.

And a choice between seeing Prince or the Decemberists at a show? If I were forced to go out then I'd take Prince, but given a free choice I'd give them both a miss. Prince was never my thing.

I didn’t realize he co-wrote I’m Fat with Michael Jackson.

Yeah, he didn’t.

Freaking internet.

Jackson supported the project, even allowing Al to use the original Bad set.
Apparently the title is just Fat too.

I did see Weird Al live once (with my son) (his younger sister saw him some years later). What blew me away was his band - apparently the same group all these years - who can play in any genre, switching track-by-track. Amazing. Weird Al had more costume changes than Stevie Nicks. WAS I NOT ENTERTAINED? I was.

Currently listening: "Bloody Mary Morning", Supersuckers with Willie Nelson.
Oh look, here's a live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoklvwtA8Lc
