And in similar good news, the wolf population of British Columbia has reached an estimated 8,500, the most - by a healthy margin - of any province in Canada except Ontario (who have 9,000).

Why is this good news? Well, as Wiki tells us:
Wolves tend to have difficulty adapting to change, and are often referred to as an indicator species; a species delineating an ecoregion or indicating an environmental condition such as a disease outbreak, pollution, species competition or climate change.
'Course, we never see THEM in the city.
But living right in urban & industrial East Vancouver, I'm happily surpised at the wildlife we DO see, in the last week alone a hawk, some eagles, a skunk, those salmon and a snowy owl. Other sightings have included coyotes, racoons, woodpeckers, and even a cougar (aka panther aka mountaion lion) ('though it was tranquilized and being moved when I saw it).
