Midnight Mass (Netflix).

Horror/thriller, small island community where weird stuff starts happening, linked to the catholic priest. There's a lot of good subtext regarding the church, but what makes this story so good is that it kept going in ways i did NOT see coming. Well written & directed, beautifully shot, brilliant acting, and featuring the kid from ET as sexy Ned Flanders.

Tiger King 1, 2 & 3

The 3rd season was boring. Some wanna-be magician, Yogatown, sexual predator who goes to Renaissance Fairs and feeds all his followers only rice and beans.

3/4 Johnny Cash as a murderer on Columbo.
I’ve never seen an episode before, without Cash it’d be bo-ring
The episode is Swan Song.

Bojack Horseman.

A cartoon about a horse who used to be a star on a popular sitcom in a world where humans and animals intermingle in society. A fabulous show, following the life of somebody making bad choices. Somehow Will Arnet's only ever serious dramatic role (co-staring Amy Sedaris & Alison Brie).

As well as handling emotional storylines better than many live action shows, it presents some serious, artful episodes that challenge what a cartoon or a tv show can be - like the silent underwater episode, or the one following Bojack's mom's dementia.

We're halfway through the final season, and it hasn't let us down yet.

Over the course of its run this show goes to some very dark places. And some really funny ones. It's worth sticking with it if you can stomach a lead character that is a self indulgent asshole, but who knows he is, and has a million excuses for his behavior, and also knows he needs to be better than he is.

So we binged the last two nights and finished it off. It was satisfying, and if i'm tempted to consider the end too sentimental, i just think back to the triple-episode saccharine sweet garbage that was the Parks & Rec finale, and then i realize a little bit of sentiment is ok. This was a great and satisfying show.

Peaky Blinders is queued up. Have begun Killing Eve. I'm desperately trying to remember what the hell is going on without actually doing any research. Something about "The Twelve"? I always get sad when Shows That Are Fun descend into Shadowy Cabal of Illuminati to explain their world.

The Responder was brilliant. Just started the new season (final) of Peaky Blinders, which has been much fun all through its run. Killing Eve I reckon has gone at least two seasons too far. Also currently enjoying a French crime drama thing from BBC4 called The Promise (La Promesse), though we do still so much miss Spiral (Engrenages).
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

I agree Killing Eve has gone too far (I thought that about the books too) but I can't look away. Jodie Comer is just brilliant, she's so Scouse in real life, she's a fabulous actor.

We watched the Promise and really enjoyed it but thought the last two episodes were awful - surely police officers are not that stupid; sorry if you've not got that far...

Spiral was definitely the best foreign language TV I've seen - it's such a shame it finished. Up there with The Wire and Peaky Blinders.
We are on the new series of Ozark, which has started very well and, for light relief in these unpleasant times, are re-watching Young Sheldon - which I think is even funnier this time round.

Just watched season 1 of Made For Love, an HBO dark comedy based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Alissa Nutting. After a woman escapes from a suffocating 10-year marriage to a tech billionaire, she discovers her husband had her fitted with a tracking device. The device, which he implanted in her brain, allows him to track her location, watch her live, and know her "emotional data" as she tries to regain her independence.

Showrunner is Patrick Somerville, who wrote on Leftovers which we loved, and while the whole cast is great, as a bonus it includes Ray Romano as the protagonist's hapless father. We loved this, which had some of the best writing I've seen, and season 2 starts later this month.

Just started Station Eleven, an HBO post-apocalyptic dystopian fiction miniseries based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Emily St. John Mandel. Showrunner once again is Patrick Somerville. A little more enigmatic and arty, focusing on a band of actors and bouncing around timelines, but we were sucked right in by end of episode 1.

But I can't help but feel guilty that i keep discovering great books - like Leftovers, and both of these - from TV shows. I guess this guilt is a hangover from growing up when TV was trash (I'm looking at you, BJ & The Bear).

Aw man, the book was great.

Station Eleven was lovely. Definitely arty as hell, but really nicely done. Toward the end some of the artifice is a bit over-the-top silly, but I loved the world building they did.
