Jesus. I go away for a bit and when I venture back on here, suddenly we've got some wag by the name of GUEST (I want to know the REASON why you can't be arsed to register pal) who wants to know why "the pogues just can't seem to put a dvd together...".

Got news for you Guest. I seriously doubt The Pogues (for that is what they are called) were personally putting a DVD together. Rather, they were encouraging a global record company to do so, and it so happens that said company have decided against it. Shit happens.

You can probably count on one hand the number of bands in the world who have even one member who frequents their own websites as much as Mr Chevron does and, for no personal gain whatsoever, keeps fans informed of what is happening (and indeed, not happening, maybe happening, probably happening etc) in Pogues-land. If you can't see what a privilege this is, you shouldn't be here. If Mr C now chooses to shut up shop that will be understandable but you'll have fucked this forum up for the vast majority of fans who really appreciate his generous and friendly presence here and are massively thankful for the regular glimpses into the band's world that Philip CHOOSES to share with us.

Remember the boxset? Imagine how shit the build-up to its release would have been if we hadn't the excitement of continual updates from Philip. It was almost as thrilling as actually listening to it.

Basically, if you want to criticise, it's your right to do so but please think it through first. What you said made little sense and was completely unreasonable. Shame on you.

Oh and Phil... (if you're reading)... still luvvin' the box set... it's the gift that keeps on givin'!

On reflection, I see no reason why registered Medusans should be considered in the same context as anonymous "guests". This is not to suggest some false division between the registered and unregistered, as though I were some demented and fascistic immigration official, just that one gets to know the style and preoccupations of the more Regular contributors and can perhaps therefore make a more considered reply. In other words, if I don't like a question from a "Guest" I shall simply ignore it. Which is not to say I won't ignore a question I don't like from a Registered Medusan. Just maybe not so much.

Come on guest, what do expect from a bunch of drunken paddies? And as for Shane MacGowan, he won't see 30.

Dear proud registered members!

Take a break from enthusiastic kicking absent guest in balls, catch your breath and look here:
These fora are intended to be welcoming to all fans of the Pogues regardless of whether their input is praise or criticism. As long as people are able to be passably civil then their posts are welcome.”

These fora are not here to provide only positive feedback about the band and its members - the fora are here for fans to have open and honest conversations. Sometimes those conversations will be critical of the people we admire, but freedom means being able to say unpopular things.”

It’s not me. It’s DzM. On my own behalf I can add that it’s a place to share and exchange opinions. Different opinions. Negative included. And a guest’s opinion is as important as an opinion of a registered member. It has been forum policy from the very first day of its existence. Every fucker with a ticket has access to Pogues gig, not only those who are officially registered at the site. CDs and DVDs usually are sold to everyone, not just well tried fans. Medusa has never been discriminative towards guests and never closed her doors in front of them. Registration doesn’t turn anybody into bigger or more equal fan.

As for Philip's decision. Two years ago, after so called “Manchester Underperformance” and a volley of harsh criticism it provoked, he said: “The point is, neither praise nor criticism are likely to affect my view of the show much.” I’d assume that the same attitude could be applied to Philip’s opinion of other matters. So I just cant see how a critical post by a guest can influence Philip’s views or plans. But of course it’s up to Philip to decide whether to initiate medusians into Pogues projects any more or not and whose posts ignore and whose – not.

Re-read Manchester Underperformance or Disappointed: Why do the Pogues cost so much or ROSELAND MARCH 14 A STATEMENT FROM THE POGUES. These threads are full of rather bitter (and sometimes absolutely undeserved) criticism from many more than one disappointed fan and still none of The Pogues announced cessation of his gigging activity. It would be as ridiculous as blaming one guest for ruining the whole forum with his remark.

Tastes differ. Some find promises and anticipation thrilling enough on their own, others look for something more material. Guest wasn’t satisfied with the sight of a candy having been waved in front of his face for two years and was really disappointed when he got nothing at the end. He didn’t hesitate to speak about his feelings here. All I can blame him for is taking promises in all good faith. It will be a lesson for him. Do not let him lose his faith in freedom of speech at least, guys.

Medusa will be a really sad place if frustrated fans are afraid to express their frustration because it’s impossible without gravely upsetting somebody or getting blamed for having an opinion.

I don't think anyone has said that Guest should not post an unpopular opinion (to know for certain I'd have to go back and read the posts, and that would be haaaard). Just as guest is welcome to complain about his disappointment, the rest of us are welcome to to disagree. Philip is perfectly welcome to decide he will ignore (most) questions or comments from Guests if he so desires just as the rest of us are welcome to ignore posts from registered users we find tedious.

In disagreeing with this Guest people have been, for the most part, civil. I wouldn't ask anyone who has posted here to change anything about their tone or content.

Macrua, you answered these points yourself. Someone's opinion of my work or the Pogues' work is none of my business. Gratuitous or ad hominem attacks for work I have failed to produce are quite another matter and, especially if they are unattributed, I see no reason to dignify them with a reply.

this is "guest" here again - don't know how to register, but my name is ian. anyway thanks again macrua for standing up for freedom of speech. and again macrua has got it exactly right - i was simply disappointed at being promised "candy" for two years (and we were repeatedly assured the DVD is coming out) only to get nothing in the end.
for what it's worth, i have spent massive amounts of money flying across two oceans to see the reunion shows every christmas since 2004. and the pogues have been part of my life and loves since 1985. so that should give some indication of how much i love the music. but my disappointment about the dvd remains. pity that i don't seen to be allowed to express it on this forum.

On the upper-right side of this page, below the Search box, should be a link that says "Register" (or something like that). Follow the steps there and voila!
my disappointment about the dvd remains. pity that i don't seen to be allowed to express it on this forum.

I don't think anyone is telling you that you can't voice them. People are simply exorcising their preference to disagree with your opinion.

Be disappointed that the DVD is MIA (I think it's fair to say that we are all disappointed). Voice your opinion. Just don't expect everyone to agree when your opinion starts to lean toward calling the band unprofessional for telling about projects in development that eventually get canceled.

Yes, the replies to the Guest have been civil so far. (Has anybody said otherwise?) And so have been the Guest’s posts. The talk has just reached a bit exaggerated proportions, with people blaming one disappointed person of ruining the fora for them:

soulfinger wrote:I am now naffed off that Mr C will no longer inform medusans of planned projects in case they don't come to fruition; which might thereby cause outrage to non-medusans.

nboldock wrote:If Mr C now chooses to shut up shop that will be understandable but you'll have fucked this forum up for the vast majority of fans... (...) Shame on you.

This seems as absurd as accusing a gig visitor who vents his disappointment loudly after a gig: "Hey, what are you doing, the band will never come to our city again and it will be all your fault!"
Disagreeing with one another is perfectly fine, but why turn it into a far-reaching tragedy? :)

Well, maybe some minor corrections?

nboldock wrote:go away for a bit and when I venture back on here, suddenly we've got some wag by the name of GUEST (I want to know the REASON why you can't be arsed to register pal) who wants to know why "the pogues just can't seem to put a dvd together..." .

I would ask to be not so pushing first of all.
Yeah, it’s always great to attach a name or a nick to somebody you talk to, but who knows, maybe guest’s reason why he can't be arsed to register is just the same as Spider’s, so let’s better leave it as it is. There is another mystery that amuses me: no guest who came here to praise the band anonymously was ever asked why he hadn’t registered first. Well, a pure coincidence of course.
And I would ask to not represent guest’s wish to know why as kind of a heinous crime. His curiosity is quite understandable: Manchester 2004, Documentary 2005, Nokia 2006 – a real DVD curse.

nboldock wrote:If you can't see what a privilege this is,

I would question such conclusion: Ian obviously saw the privilege and tried to use the opportunity to get a competent first-hand answer.

nboldock wrote:you shouldn't be here.

I would choose another wording to express my enthusiasm towards those with alternative view. (On the other hand it DOESN’T say that guest shouldn’t post an unpopular opinion, right, DzM?)

nboldock wrote:you'll have fucked this forum up for the vast majority of fans.

I would reformulate this invitation for constructive discussion and friendly exchange of opinions a bit. (coz now it resembles “you shouldn’t post an unpopular opinion, or the whole community will be punished for you!” a lot)

nboldock wrote:What you said made little sense and was completely unreasonable.

I would try a bit harder to make it look as a real attempt to reach consensus or mutual understanding.

nboldock wrote:Shame on you.

And I wouldn’t shame guests for asking questions or sharing their disappointment.

But as a whole it was bloody amicable reception indeed!

When did you turn so cuddly?

Ok I withdraw use of naffed off. I am sorry to have used such inflamatory terms. I apologise for being irritated with the cause and effect of guest complaining and Philip deciding he would be withdrawing his feeding to us of information. The drip, drip, drip-feeding of the contents of the box set was a joy for me.

I hereby promise to be nice to everyone on here who gets on my nerves.........presumably you'll be doing the same?
