As far as anyone can tell it's a Leadbelly song, though it is sometimes mistakenly credited to Woody Guthrie.

I have an LP copy of "Folkaways: A Vision Shared. A Tribute to Woodie Guthrie and Leadbelly" with that song on it sung by Brian Wilson. Words and Music are attributed to Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) and John C. Lomax.

Goodnight Irene is, for some weird reason, sung by Bristol Rovers football fans.

I suppose the version of Where Did You Sleep Last Night that everyone knows is on Nirvana Unplugged. It's also covered by English folkies Coope, Boyes and Simpson.

theres a tune on the upcoming tom waits release called "goodnight irene" i'm pretty sure its this same song too

now that i have the best of album of 2006 Tom Waits' Orphans i can indeed confirm that "Goodnight Irene" is the aforementioned one

Originally a Leadbelly song it has been covered by Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Steve Earl, Jim Reeves,Willie Nelson, Little Richard and Jimi Hendrix among others. Need to correct another post though, the only time you will here this sung at Ashton Gate is when Bristol Rovers play there as it is the Rovers anthem. Been singing it since the 50's. As a mad Rovers and Pogues fan was particularly pleased Shane chose to cover this.
