I recently heard a live song by the boys called Goodnight Irene. When and where is this from?

Probably some bootleg from 1988. Check this list.

Yep. More info about its origins here. Yet it sometimes features on "Irish trad" compilations - everybody seems eager to claim a nice song. :D

We did "Goodnight Irene" as a final encore during St Patrick's Week 1988, as a grand finale for all participants in the show - Pogues, Kirsty, Joe, After Tonite, Lynval Golding, Steve Earle, Mary Coughlan, whoever was on that night. Paul Scully finally recorded it at Brixton on the last night (the other shows were all at the Town and Country aka The Forum) but the tape ran out before the end. So if there is a bootleg version out there, it is likely to be the only version in existence. As far as anyone can tell it's a Leadbelly song, though it is sometimes mistakenly credited to Woody Guthrie.

I have an LP copy of "Folkaways: A Vision Shared. A Tribute to Woodie Guthrie and Leadbelly" with that song on it sung by Brian Wilson. Words and Music are attributed to Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) and John C. Lomax.

Here is some interesting information on it: http://www.hlmusic.com/goodnigh.htm

The Pogues also did (at least once in Birmingham according to pogueslive.com) a song called Monkey Man. There´s a Rolling Stones song called Monkey Man, is that the one they did? Anybody know?

Could be the ska classic by Toots & The Maytals covered by the Specials
