Pogues Tribute album of your dreams

Post Mon Feb 01, 2016 2:15 am

Close your eyes, imagine Bros. Warner have hired you as Executive Producer of a Pogues tribute album. What do you want to see on the tracklist?

I'll get us started with a couple:

Tom Waits - The Old Main Drag (solo piano/vocal, maybe a horn solo)
Steve Earle - If I Should Fall From Grace (he's played it slow and acoustic live)
DropKick Murphys - Gentleman Soldier

Five Green Queens And Jean à la Richard Cheese, please!

I'm forever obsessed with his cover of Holiday In Cambodia.

I am a little hazy on this, but I remember an interview with Elvis Costello. He was producing a record of standards for Rod Stewart and wanted him to cover one of Shane's songs. I always thought Rod voice would be a great match for Rainy Night in Soho. So

I'd like to hear a slowed down New Orleans version of Bottle of Smoke performed by Dr John

I'm sure I've read somewhere that might have actually happened, albeit unreleased, and also that there is a recording from those sessions of Rod Stewart doing The Old Main Drag, and that Costello loved it but upon reflection Stewart wasn't happy with the lyrical content and wouldn't allow its release.

If we could reach back in time, I'd say the Specials (original lineup) doing Streams of Whiskey. Modern day? Perhaps Modest Mouse doing Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah...

This is dreams, so back in time is AOK. On that note...

Sick Bed of Cuuchulainn - (The late, great) Stan Rogers, with Garnet Roger's fiddle on Spider's whistle part. And while we're were at it, this'll be the big band, as on Between the Breaks ... Live!, the usual trio augmented with Paul Mills on guitar and Grit Laskin on mandolins and pipes.

My only rule was to keep to musicians and bands that are still active.

1. The Libertines: Dark Streets Of London
2. The Sex Pistols: Hot Dogs With Everything
3. Siouxsie Sioux: Haunted
4. The Waterboys: The Broad Majestic Shannon
5. Ray Davies: Rainy Night In Soho
6. The Happy Mondays: Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
7. The Specials: Young Ned Of The Hill
8. Big Country: Cotton Fields
9. Seasick Steve: If I Should Fall From Grace With God
10. Stiff Little Fingers: Rain Street
11. The Fall: Infinity
12. Bob Dylan: The Bastard Lanlord
13. Ian Anderson: The Gartloney Rats
14. Ride: Lorelei

I like the idea (above) of Ray Davies doing Rainy Night In Soho..and Seasick Steve doing Grace...yeah..<nods head in contemplative agreement>
Personally I would absolutely have to have the 2001 line-up of The Band From County Hell doing Fiesta and Transmetropolitan...both songs they regularly played live back then, but not any more...mad as a hatter covers which I used to boogie my drunken arse off to...ah them drunken old days!...<sips tea>

If we are going to dream, then I'd have Johnny Cash singing "A Pair of Brown Eyes". But, If I am going to go that far, then I would go all the way and put Hank Williams on "Streams of Whiskey".

Damn, wish Rick Rubin had thought of that one for Johnny!
