Judgmental? Perhaps, but not about your being a guest.

I just find it funny when anonymous/guest posters say things like "I'm on record."

If you do need to be anonymous to protect yourself from your dark and troubled past, it's still pretty darned easy to register as "I-Hate-Usernames" and use a bogus email address. You'll get the benefit of being registered (private messages, the fora telling you which threads are new since you were last here, nobody else posting with your name, etc), nobody here will know any more about you than they do now, etc.

And how cool is that, to have a dark past to hide from? I wish I had a dark past filled with mystery and danger.

I appreciate the ironic value of saying "I'm on record" as well, don't get me wrong. My opinion isn't valuable in the first place. It's just a figure of speech.

But let's get back-ish to the topic at hand. Strummer plays a mean guitar on the instrumental section of Turkish, don't he? I love it when he kicks in at the last 30 seconds or so.

Re: Pogues Live Album..any good?

Post Fri Nov 09, 2007 10:31 pm

We recorded "proper" live albums in 1987 (Glasgow), 1988 (London) and twice in 1991(with the Chieftains and with Joe Strummer) but never rated the results enough to release them except in excerpt form. The passage of time has shown them to be rather good, but it made more sense by then to release the 2001 album.

Philip, has any thought been given to allowing Internet downloads of these
"rare" songs (assuming they aren't on the boxset)? I don't know if that means you can just bypass the record companies, have the money go right into your pockets. (Don't know
if DZM/this website could support a venture like this or it would make financial sense).

I for one, love to hear different lead singers of songs-you or Shane singing Young Ned, collaborations (Elvis Costello, Los Lobos), would gladly pay
a few dollars to be able to download these.

Your thoughts??

Probably for the best. That guy seemed like he was just looking for trouble.

If it hasn't made it to the box set, there's a good chance we'd rather you didn't hear it. Even if that were not the case, it strikes me that there'd be a ton of legal stuff to wade through. I don't think we've even spoken to EC, for example, since he and the missus dropped in on the "Fall From Grace" sessions to say hello.

However, watch out for a fleeting glimpse of Elvis-impersonating-Dylan-singing Shane on the "Straight In The Eye" and, indeed, Shane singing Elvis.

I would personally love to hear that, particularly Shane singing Elvis. I have heard on occasion Elvis's perfect enunciation, so unlike Shane and maybe not entirely appropriate, on songs like "Dirty Old Town" and "The Old Main Drag". Actually, I'd even like to hear more of that, though I'm dying to hear Shane's take on Elvis.

Streams of Whiskey Live CD

Post Tue Feb 17, 2009 9:43 pm

If this topic does already exist, excuse me. Just delete it and ban me. (Don't ban me!!)

I just bought "Streams of Whiskey - Live in Switzerland 1991" from Amazon. I read that the Pogues didn't want to publish this live concert, because they were unhappy with it. So it was released against their accordance. That's what the Amazon-text said. They wrote that the sound quality was awful, as well. (Some customer who bought it wrote it actually).

But I'm a Pogues fan so I bought it and I have to say that it is actually not the prettiest Pogues record that I own. It must have been shortly before Shane MacGowan left the band, and you can hear that he's not as brilliant as he was the years before. He seems to be quite out of it. The sound quality is actually not that great. Especially the bass is far too quiet and gentle. But the playing of the band is as good as always, though.

Does anybody own this one, too? What do you think? Worth buying? I say: For Pogues Fans who are always excited with new material they can get (like me), it is good. But you should buy the albums and the Box Set at first, those are the greatest.

Good Night!
