Damien Dempsey's version of "Rainy Night..." on the album you mentioned above... well, I have to admit to having something of a soft spot for young Damo, but his "Rainy Night..." is absolutely dire.

Why on earth is he on the Last Session, fucking up Ronnie Drew's version?
Why spend your leisure bereft of pleasure?

I think it can be really tough for the Boys to do an album with only new songs on it.
It's been a long time since they been together in a studio.
So if we the Fans want some new material and the bandmembers wants to release a new CD the best thing probably will be to do a CD with some nice covers and maybe 3-4 new songs.
If it works out well the next step would be to do the CD with only new material 8)
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior and shove you in the ground. But you'll stick your head back out and shout "We'll have another round"

Wasn't that the Pogue Mahone album?

If anything, with the 'chart pressure' lifted from the early days maybe a revisit and reworking of some of the tunes from the boxset would be an idea?
I wish I'd done biology for an urge within me wanted to do it then

new music

Post Sat Apr 24, 2010 3:15 pm

the pogues have stated on many occasions since reforming in 2001 that there will be no new music or album recorded.....speaking as a fan since the eighties i was wondering peoples view on this.....taking madness as an example their 2009 album "liberty of norton foplgate" is without doubt there finest work and they have split up and reformed on more than one occasion.....i just find it a little boring that pogues live shows have virtually the same setlist tour after tour.......does anyone else feel that new material would add a little extra to the shows
wembley wonder

that might add to the shows, but would certainly add to listening pleasure in general,
kinda hard to imagine that such a bunch of fine musicians cannot find new tunes to play
In heaven I met my Maker, I told Him a few jokes
we also sang some songs, He even liked The Pogues

Philip, on a slightly less irreverent note, do you (or other members of the band) find it at all encouraging that fans still wish for new music from you? It seems like the fans of so many acts that have been around as long as The Pogues are content to only want to hear the old stuff, and in fact often shun newer work. I'm sure you get sick of being asked about it, and that's understandable after a point, but I guess I'm curious about your take on the constant requests for it.
Have you heard about the big strong man?

When I say I haven't given it much thought, I don't mean that to seem arrogant or uncaring. It's terrific that people want to hear your music, old or new, but the truth is, the only music we have is the music that exists. It's very difficult to conceive of how people respond to hypothetical music you haven't written yet. I know that is not precisely your question, but that is nevertheless the way my mind processes it. That said, in the spirit of your enquiry, am I pleased that the Pogues fan is smarter than the average bear? For sure.

Fair point, Philip, neither am I, no worries there.
I'll love 'The Pogues forever without new songs too.

But you guys are of the creative kind, aren't you?
Don't you ever sit around, playing an instrument
or playing with words,
thinking 'hell yeah, that might become a cool song'?

I admire both the drive and the talent of creative people,
and assume both the drive and the talent are still there,
aren't they?

Then again, if fed up by this topic, let it go.

Looking forward to the Münster and Amsterdam gigs,
thanks for dropping by,

yours, Andries

Well, it might be worth considering that the time we spend together as The Pogues, much as we enjoy it, has come to take up a relatively small portion of our lives: most of us have other things going on in our musical/artistic lives which more than fulfill our creative impulses. Even if not all our non-Pogues projects see daylight, they do tend to take priority in our working lives. The only thing that would change that equation, realistically, would be a batch of new Shane MacGowan songs in a fairly advanced state of completion, but as these do not appear to be forthcoming, we don't trouble over it.

thanks again for responding in the first place, Philip, and many a fair point made and taken again,
so I gladly settle for the many clasics you guys will have on offer in Münster and Amsterdam

take care

More than about newly recorded music I wondered about why some of the "new" stuff from the boxed set did not find it's way into the live shows. NW3 and "The Travelling People" would have been the obvious choice, imho.

Both titles were certainly at the top of a shortlist a few months ago. Getting the singer into the same time-space continuum as the rest of the band for anything resembling a rehearsal continues to be a hazardous, many would say fruitless, task, which is not to say the singer is not full of good intentions.

I would love to hear them. What about those laminated ( word? ) papers with they lyrics on it he used in 2008? He should be able to remember the melody, shouldn't he. I mean, he made at least two songs out of NW3.
