Bottoms Up

Post Thu Apr 23, 2009 2:17 pm

Having not heard this CD I'm curious about 4 of the tracks on it:

Turkish Song of the Damned (Home Tape) - is this from a rehearsal? Anybody know when?
Rainy Night in Soho (Flugel Long Version Remix) - is this the 12" version of the 1991 remix, or an alternative unreleased mix?
Heart Shaped Sunglasses - is this a demo/outake from the 'Pogue Mahone' album sessions?
Tosspint (Remix) - is this an alternative mix from the 'PM' sessions?

Could anybody who has the CD shed some light on this? And why weren't any of these tracks included on the boxset, especially Heart Shaped Sunglasses?

Ta!

from 1987. Only mandola (Jem) and guitar (Shane?) and Shane on vocals.

can't help you with that, to me sounds like the usual version with flugelhorn.

yes
Kilmichael wrote:Tosspint (Remix) - is this an alternative mix from the 'PM' sessions?

sounds more like a demo. Definitely no remix of the album version. The end features an instrumental of the main theme in a very fast way moving over into a diffrent melody (trad. ??) and going back to the main "Tosspint theme".

All of these tracks were "auditioned" for the box set and all of them found wanting in one way or another. "Turkish" is intensely dreary, though there is a snippet of either "Turkish" or perhaps another Shane/Jem/James demo near the end of the box, chatter only. There were so many versions of the 1991 "Rainy Night" that I long ago gave up trying to sort them out. I could not find a tape of "Heart Shaped Shades" that was not damaged, and by then we had so much stuff already from the final album......so I didn't try very hard to mend what we did have. Tosspint, like almost everything else on that album, had multiple undesignated mixes and, well, life's too short. It has to be said, too, the sound quality on Bottoms Up is a bit lo-fi.

For what it's worth, the "serious" outtakes from the box set take up a further two full CDRs.

Alex and Philip, thanks for the replies. I've been toying with trying to get hold of a copy of Bottoms Up, but the prices I've seen them going for has always put me off.

Philip, presumably the snippet of Turkish/another track you're referring to is the little bit of chatter between Jem & James right at the end of 'Goodnight Irene' on the box set? That would mean the line up for 'Turkish' is mandola (Jem), guitar (James rather than Shane) and vocals (Shane) I guess? Also Philip, to me your answer implies there was more than just 'Turkish' from this session? Finally, Alex states it was recorded in 1987. I'm not in a position to diasagree, but 1986 would seem like a more likely date to me, e.g. before the band recorded 'Turkish' for the Janice Long show and started playing it live? Sorry for all these additional questions, but I think by now my obession with these little details about recording sessions is pretty well established!

And is it Heart Shaped Sunglasses or Shades?!

You are correct in ID-ing the "chatter", but what I can't remember for sure is whether I took this from the "Turkish" demo or another similar demo of an RnB number (a MacGowan song, a sort of proto-Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah) with either James or Shane on organ, though probably NOT from the same "session" as "Turkish". In any event, your personnel line up for "Turkish" seems correct.

As we performed an early arrangement of "Turkish" on the Janice Long Show on Radio One in October 1986 (available on the box set), I think that indicates the rough song demo comes from 1986 also.

It's Heart Shaped Sunglasses.

As ever Philip, thanks for taking the time. The shanemacgowan.de webiste lists the following in the Demos section:

xx.xx.1987
1. Unknown Instrumental
2. Unknown Instrumental
3. Unknown Instrumental (maybe a very slow version of IISFFGWG)
4. Turkish Song Of The Damned (very slow)
5. Talk To Me Baby (Organ with Shane on vocals - 9 minute track)
6. Metropolis (acoustic version)
7. A Rainy Night In Soho

I suspect the date should be 1986. I wonder if the RnB number with organ you refer to above is 'Talk To Me Baby'? Could also be the source for the Bottoms Up version of 'Turkish'.

I'm going to say yes on all three counts, without knowing for certain.

Pages 227-8 of 'Kiss My Arse' give a nice insight into the development of 'Turkish' and the type of 'home demo session' the above probably was. Looks like it was probably James on mandolin and Jem on guitar, and that the organ on 'Talk To Me Baby' was Shane's Casio keyboard.

Finally got hold of a copy of this... pretty good but as Phil says a bit lo-fi and some of the tracks seem to have been mastered a bit slow to me.

Anyway, does anybody know who wrote 'Heart Shaped Sunglasses'? Was it just Jamie Clarke or did others have a hand in it?

Cheers.

Jamie recorded his own version for his 1999 album "Sickly men of thirty or so". The song is credited to (Clarke/Stacy/McNally).
