Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys

Post Thu Feb 02, 2006 2:02 am

It's like comparing apples and oranges. I enjoy both bands, but they are two totally different sounding groups. Flogging Molly (from California) sound more like the early pogues musically and lyrically, but no one can TRUELY match the Pogues and Shane MacGowan's lyrics. FM probably benefit from Matt Hensley's skateboarding championship status--or they would still be playing local bars in Los Angeles -- Am I right??

Dropkick Murphys are more energetic by far, but sometimes just a little too hard and loud. Perhaps a little too proud of their Home-Town of Boston too?

I still have yet to check out Greenland Whalefishers. Anyone know their link?

I like them a lot. Every once in a while yoiu get a Norwegian accent, but also, at times, you could swear it was Shane MacGowan..... as he apparently did in a confused state!

I got Streets Of Salvation by The Greenland Whale Fishers the other day and it is very good. I agree with Mr V that, at times, the singer sounds similar to a young MacGowan.

I finally listened to Flogging Molly, I quite like them actually, a bit rough round the edges but they're okay.

Everythings OK Eric, I've got a Part Time job at the moment but I'm looking for a Full Time one as it's not an awful lot of money.

If its Irish punk rock, then is all goes back to The Pogues. Some of you guys can lay claim that Flogging Molly doesn't sound like the Pogues, but the spirit of the music and the genre was invented by the Pogues. Also Sentimental Johnny rips off The Pogues Fiesta, while Big Bag of Bricks rips off The Pogues Turkish Song of the Damned.

I've said before that I still like Flogging Molly, but as before the differences lie in the music, Dave King will never be able to hold a candle to Shane MacGowan's songwriting. Even when Shane's writing was shaky at times, due to his problems with the bottle, it still was better than anything Flogging Molly has produced. As before Swagger and Drunken Lullabies are very good albums, but when compared to Red Roses For Me, Rum, Sodomy and the Lash, and If I Should Fall From Grace With God, hell I'll even throw in Peace and Love, it is clear that Flogging Molly will never be in the same universe as The Pogues. Also, I believe The Tossers out of Chicago, don't get that much credit, their new album was very well done, even though one song rips off The Pogues' Lorca's Novena.

According to your last post, there's a whole lot of "ripping off" of the Pogues going on. I prefer to look at these cases, and you could name several other by the criteria of "there are some similarities" ..... but lets face it: all of these songs were written a decade or more after the Pogues penned their songs, and have recorded nothing since. I prefer to stay on teh sunny side of the street and think of it as a good musical influence.... on that I would like to hear other bands appreciate and, as you call it, "rip off."

You prefer to stay on the sunnyside of the street huh, well I'm a firm believer in the philosophy that all these new bands in the Celtic punk genre, need to get their own sound and stop looking up to grandad.

I said Flogging Molly is a good band, as are The Tossers, but seriously anyone playing this brand of music owns their debt to The Pogues.

Wow. I was on iTunes and saw this post and listened to Big Bag of Bricks............what the fuck. The verse is the same, note-for-note, as Turkish Song of the Damned. "Rip off", nah, that song is a copy.

Flogging Molly throws a punky Irish party

Is Celtic punk an oxymoron?
Dublin-born Dave King, singer, songwriter and guitarist for Flogging Molly, gave the question some thought.
