Not a hope in hell. They never leave and when they do they're not gone for long.

So, here it is... four days since Heather's last day of work, and we never did hear if she listened to Flogging Molly. Oh when will she return. Damn. Damn. Damn. Unemployment. Who will I speak Japanese with?

I quite agree. None of these bands are fit to lace The Pogues boots (or drinks).

I quite disagree, and here's why. DKM have a sound that is totally different than the Pogues. They come more from a punk background. But they love the Pogues and were influenced by them, for which I am thankful, but they don't go around trying to be the Pogues II (though I have mixed feelings of their cover of Green Fields of France on the latest). Flogging Molly is an Irish pub band on sterroids. But I don't mean they are some kind of hard core band. They play their own songs. The can be a little bit folky at time, a little bit country, and a little bit rock and roll, depending on the song. They are very good. And their front man writes most of the songs and is from Dublin, and is in the age range that would put him only slightly younger than the Pogues. Don't you think he would have been influence by not only the Pogues, but also the same influences the Pogues had? Really, I don't know why people think that because this is a Pogues-centric site we all need to just worship the Pogues. Because, it didn't start, and it sure as shit isn't going to end with the Pogues. Long ago some people probably said the Pogues are not fit to lace the boots or drink of so-and-so, and that they were trying to be the Dubliners. :)

To clarify- I am not suggesting that The Pogues are the only great band with folk/punk influences. For example, I think The Men They Couldn't Hang and The Waterboys are very good bands, to name just two out of many. I just think most of the bands listed on this thread are pretty average in comparison.
In hindsight it is probably unfair to accuse these bands of trying to copy The Pogues, because I don't really know what their motivation for making music is- but they really aren't in the same league as The Pogues.
Finally, I just want to add that I think the type of music we are talking about pretty much did begin with The Pogues, because back in 1982 or whatever year it was when they were starting out, music was dominated by crap synth bands churning out the same old shite. I think what The Pogues did when they took folk music and injected the enegry of punk was a totally new and original thing.

I totally agree with you on this one, Eric. Three different bands. three different sounds and they all have their own qualities and they all rock!

Neither, but I do love Flogging Molly, howver both bandsseriously lack the fire, energy, and spirit of The Pogues. Fist off, I fucking hate the Dropkick Murphy's. I saw them open up for The Sex Pistols in 2003 in Boston and they were terrible, maybe I just really wanted to see The Sex Pistols, but Dropkick seriously disappointed me. I saw Flogging Molly a year ago in Norfolk, and it was a great show. But, to me the differences lie in the music. No matter how hard FM and DM try they never will be in the same universe as The Pogues.

dropkick murphies are just shite and flogging molly...it IS the pogues, just not as good.

Ok, I'm calling you out IMLH.. or Liv, or Tony, or china.... depending on my mood. What do you actually own or what have you seriously listened to from these bands? Neither are trying to be the Pogues (for the umteenth time). DKM is a punk band with a folk problem, and FM is a folk/country/pub band with a rock problem. Also, have you heard the Tossers? if so what do you think of them? For god's sake, there is room enough in this style of music for more than the Pogues and the Popes, is there not? :?

The Dropkick Murphy's really stink. And Flogging Molly's okay. I have one of their records. They're a clean, neatly packaged commercial band. And since only the lead singer is from Ireland I don't give them too much respect. I'd still go to one of their shows though. But who else loves McDermott's 2 hrs. and the Levellers?
