I agree with you on this one Heather. Although not a teenager in the early Eighties, (close though, graduated High School in '77,) a lot of the New Wave released at that time was far better than that REALLY annoying virus circulating at that time.......DISCO.....

Ah! The disco prejudice thing. I think most musical genres have some merit if you look closely enough. Curtis Mayfield's disco stuff stands up and the whole Philly Disco thing was terrific. We should all be more tolerant, except for the Smiths and C&W. Mind you, even I can tolerate Country when Solomon Burke sings it.

We could argue about the Smiths (or we could not ) but how could any serious soulfan dismiss Country music? Hank Williams's records are as soulful as anything released by Stax, the soul covers done by the Flying Burrito Brothers are simply wonderful and (as you already mentioned) singers like Solomon, Johnny Adams or James Carr sing a lot of country material.
