Dropkicks, Briggs, Tossers - Vancouver

Post Wed Nov 07, 2007 8:38 pm

Wow! great Dropkick Murphys show last night at The Commodore in Vancouver.
The Tossers were the opening band, and were quite impressive. The bass player mentioned that it took them all day to get into Canada, and that their merchandise was held up at the border for some reason. Too bad - I would have bought a t-shirt and CD, based on that show alone. Can't wait to see them again, maybe in a smaller venue as the headliner. I had only heard the EP that was given away at the Pogues shows in Chicago, but their live show was even better! Please come back soon, guys!
The Briggs were next up - L.A. band, straight ahead full throttle rock.
The DKM's did not disappoint. They played lots from the new album, and enough older favorites that I'm hoarse today from singing along last night. The crowd was raucous and rough, but everyone was there for a good time - I didn't see any serious fights, although there were a few drunks that were removed for their own good. Watching those guys stagger around the fringes of the mosh pit was like watching a toddler wandering into traffic. You knew that it was only blind luck that kept them from getting slammed...
This was the 5th show in 5 nights for these guys, but the energy was in-tense! great show!

What the hell are The Tossers opening up for Dropkick Murphy's. The Tossers have been around a lot longer than DKM and are a lot better songwriters as well.

They were actually founded around the same time and the Murphys have a much larger following songwriting ability aside.

The Dropkicks are more mainstream. That's why they have a bigger following. A little bit like Flogging Molly I guess. The Tossers, even though they are rock influenced, are much more Irish sounding, they have more balads, no electric instruments, they even have acapella songs!

So anyway, I got my ticket today. I've just seen that the Briggs will be playing too. Anybody familiar with them? Are they any good? And does anybody know whether the Tossers are before or after the Briggs? After I hope, since the second band always have more play time than the first. That's gonna be an awesome show anyhow!

Just saw The Briggs last month open for Bad Religion. Not bad,Street Dog-ish anthematic songs.LA band on Sideonedummy,Flogging Mollys' label. No Irish influence at all, more straight forward.Worth a look though.Iain,I agree with you 99% of the time. This is the 1% that I don't.I saw The Tossers warm up the Street Dogs & they came damn close to stealing the show. But The Murphys??Can I assume that you've never seen them live & you're basing your opinion on their studio music? They are probably my favorite live act,so I'm biased of course. But if you haven't seen them,by all means dude,go!

btw,welcome to the fora "officially"

I've seen the Briggs open for Flogging Molly and they were really good I greatly enjoyed their set. The Street Dogs comparisons are apt enough they definitely have the same kind of vibe if not sound. Seen the Tossers twice both times amazing even if the lead singer was absolutely plastered both times leading to the rest of the band seeming somewhat annoyed with him. As for the Murphys always amazing live but I would disagree with orrok in that I feel the Street Dogs are even better live. Now I have only seen the Dogs live in Boston but there is an electricity to there shows in front of a home crowd that I have never seen matched. While the Murphys are great and will always be loved in Boston the local punks/skins really feel left in the dustbin by them as far as I can tell while the Street Dogs are really connected to the local scene so get that much more of a great reaction.

The big difference seems to come back to the lead singer...Mike McColgan knows how to work a stage/crowd probably better than anyone in punk today.Al Barr is a very adaquate singer, minimal front man.Mr. Mike just lifts the fucking roof off of venues. So now you must know what I mean that the Tossers came close to stealing the show...and yes..Tony was fucking trashed...so THEY are that good live too.So now that I've honoured all the rest, the Murphs are still the best!!

BTW,all of you old school Murphys fans who haven't heard yet...Rick Bartons' new band is called Everybody Out...saw them on the last Murphs tour (actually saw their 2nd show) & they rocked...they're going to do a mini tour opening for the Dogs with my homes Darkbuster in between. For those who can see them,go early & enjoy.Outside of the NE USA they do have a myspace... I would give you a link but I don't do myspace except to look..
