Seriously? Flogging Molly to me has the least punk bit of all the 'irish-punk' bands I listen to.
Posted: Wed Mar 21, 2007 4:58 amI'm not sure what it is exactly about their music, but I hear it often in modern Irish punk bands. It's a sound that I recognise, but it's hard to explain. Somehow the instruments just don't seem to blend the same way they do with the Pogues and this band. The Pogues, to me anyways, seem more Irish orientated with inspiration still drawn to various parts of rock/punk. FM, on the otherhand, seem more like a punk/rock/whatever band with Irish inspiration but more of a focus on rock or punk or whatever type of music you'd call it.

If I am honest the lead singer and the way he does things reminds me of a little known band by the name of Blyth Power. I bet some of you haven't heard that name? They were fronted by a chap called Josef Porta and took their name from a power station in NE England singing stories about British history but with an intellectual-punk following when everybody started doing grunge - they did folk punk with this geezer, lead singer and drummer.
I have not seen FM live yet but if it makes any sense I prefer the Irish-Punk feel to be an overral assessment of a band rather than two styles blended in one song. For instance, Shards of Life by the Street Dogs, no electric guitars but just how it should be IMO. That song would be spoilt if it all of a sudden turned into thrash city, so I think if anything maybe FM for me are a little too clever in what they mish and mash. I would personally love to hear them render some old traditionals like the Murphys have.
