Hmm, I'm playing my own show 7-9 that night, is it worth packing up the gear and whipping on over there for the last hour? How weird would it be to hear someone else cover the same Pogues song as you an hour later, except well?

Take it from someone who has heard the real deal live three times in the past 12 months (twice in NYC and once in San Fran). KMRIA are brilliant. It will be worth it. My wife and I are going. Look for the Medusa t-shirts.

Great gig at The Wonder Ballroom on St Patricks Day. KMRIA will be playing in Portland again around Christmas . The Pogues are planning a West coast tour in the fall. Trying to get them to play in Portland. Maybe you can email Philip Chevron and have them check out a Portland gig. Shane and the popes played here in PDX a couple of times. Tery Woods and friends played Kells over St Patricks day a few years back. I have emailed a member of kmria to see if they have a way to contact the Pogues or their tour managers. Beervana USA aka Portland would give them a warm welcome. Let me know if you email Philip Chevron. I knew Jem Finer way back in our university days back in England

KMRIA in Portland Tonight!

Post Mon Mar 17, 2008 6:19 pm

March 17th- the return of Pogues tribute band K.M.R.I.A.!!! At the Crystal Ballroom!
Portland, OR http://www.myspace.com/kmriaband
with My Life in Black and White, $10 1332 W Burnside

K.M.R.I.A.
This special -- and quite specific -- ensemble plays Pogues music (nothing but!) and is a celebration of that beloved Irish group's virtuosity, songcraft and spirit. The K.M.R.I.A. band features an all-star cast of Pacific Northwest rock: Chris Funk and Jenny Conlee of The Decemberists; Ezra Holbrook of Dr Theopolis; Hanz Araki of The Whyos & Paperboys; Jesse Emerson of Amelia; singer Casey Neill; and Derek Brown of the Eels and Fernando. The show features as much grit, bluster and drunken glory as can be mustered without sacrificing the intricacies of the material. The name K.M.R.I.A. is an acronym for "Kiss my Royal Irish Ass," excerpted from James Joyce's Ulysses and used in the Pogues song "Transmetropolitan." The band only play shows around Xmas and, of course, St. Pat's.

"I heartily subscribe to this effort. Why, I even gave Funk and Conlee directions how to play the impossibly arcane middle section of Bottle of Smoke, which neither Jem (who wrote the damn middle section) nor Terry Woods (who never plays the same thing twice) can actually get through without extemporizing. Neither can I, truth be told. But at least I know how it's supposed to go." - James Fearnely of the Pogues

KMRIA rise again!

KMRIA:
A Pogues Tribute Band featuring an all star cast of Portland musicians featuring members of the Decemberists, Eels, Amelia, Casey Neill & the Norway Rats, and Minus 5

4th ANNUAL ST PATRICKS DAY SHOWS

March 13th- SEATTLE, WA Tractor Tavern (with the MINUS 5)
Mar 14th- PORTLAND, OR- Crystal Ballroom (with the MINUS 5)

"I heartily subscribe to this effort. Why, I even gave Funk and Conlee directions how to play the impossibly arcane middle section of Bottle of Smoke, which neither Jem (who wrote the damn middle section) nor Terry Woods (who never plays the same thing twice) can actually get through without extemporizing. Neither can I, truth be told. But at least I know how it's supposed to go."
JAMES FEARNLEY of the POGUES

KMRIA is:
Jennie Conlee (Decemberists) on accordion, piano, and vocals
Chris Funk (Decemberists) on banjo, octave mandolin, and mandolin
Jesse Emerson (Amelia, ex-Decemberists) on bass
Derek Brown (Fernando, Eels) on drums
Hanz Araki (Whyos, An Tua) on flutes, whistles, and vocals
Casey Neill on lead vocals and guitar (Daemon Recording Artist)
Ezra Holbrook (ex-Decemberists, Dr Theopolis) on lead vocals and guitar
Scott McCaughey (Minus 5, Robyn Hitchcock, R.E.M) on lead vocals and guitar

KMRIA will be performing faithful renditions of the Pogues' mix of traditional Irish music and punk rock. Drawing from the records Red Roses For Me, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, Poguetry in Motion, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Peace and Love, and Hell's Ditch, many of the most beloved songs in their repertoire will be covered. The show features as much grit, bluster, and drunken glory as can be mustered without sacrificing the intricacies of the material. The name KMRIA is an acronym for "Kiss my Royal Irish Ass" excerpted from James Joyce's Ulysses and used in the Pogues song "Transmetropolitan".

Oh MAN!

IF I weren't one of the under-financed right now AND there weren't actual Pogues shows going on I'd be having to really be considering this. I'm afraid it would come down to a coin toss: KMRIA in Portland, or Ollin covering Rum, Sodomy & The Lash in LA? And here I sit in the middle not going to either.

It's the age old dilemma: Have money but no time to enjoy it, or have time to do things and no money to pay for it. :(
