From the press release: “Orphans are rough and tender tunes. Rhumbas about mermaids, shuffles about trainwrecks, tarantellas about insects, madrigrals about drowning,” says Waits. “Scared, mean, orphans songs of rapture and melancholy. Songs that grew up hard. Songs of dubious origin rescued from cruel fate and now left wanting only to be cared for. Show that you are not afraid and take them home. They don’t bite, they just need attention.”

Orphans was again produced by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan.

Yes, guaranteed worth the price (if yer a fan) - the few songs that are from soundtracks and tribute albums, etc, that I've already got are really good. (Ha! I mis-typed that "really god").

Wonder if "Lord I've Been Changed" is the song that ends John Hammond's "Wicked Grin" album? If so it's one of the best gospel numbers Tom's done, right up there with "Jesus Gonna Be Here".

I'm pretty thrilled about this. These days it's fairly rare that I get worked up about anything recorded later than 1954 or so. But Tom is timeless.

ha, sorry, didn't realise that could seem so morbid without proper context (though "proper context" is not important when addressing guilty english ears...) i neglected to take into account our amerikun friends... but rest assured, those responsible are soon to arrive on these shores, ready to re-learn what cricket weather really looks like and where those ashes (albeit replica) really belong.
