Damien Dempsey...

Post Mon Jul 03, 2006 11:30 pm

After reading rave reviews about him in the Irish Post, and hearing great stuff about him from other people and on this forum (aparantly he's one of Shane's favourites...) I finalyl decided to check him out. So I downloaded a fair few of his songs...

He is absolutely, unbelievably, laughably SHITE.

Honestly, his voice is completely ridiculous and he ruins great songs like Rocky Road and FTONY.

Can't understand the hype really - he's absolutely shocking.

I had similar thoughts the first time I heard him. It was on a TV show. The LLS actually. Then one day I was in the record shop and he was singing in the background. 'Who's that singing' says I

'it's Damien Dempsey'
'has he an album'
'he has'
'gimme it'

He's an acquired taste. I love his accent. He's a good singer. What more can I say.

I agree. I bought one of his albums after having so many recommendations, including people who like the same kind of music as me normally. I was so dissappointed when I heard it. I don't have a problem with his voice but the lyrics were so bad they made me cringe.

Dempsey assaults every micophone, guitar and song he touches. Dublin Town sounds like it was written on the back of a fag pack.

damo

Post Fri Jul 07, 2006 12:32 pm

the pogues are my favourite group and i would generally be into folk music such as luke kelly, planxty, waterboys, steve earle but i rate damien dempsey very highly. i have been to see him 3 times and each time he performed brilliantly.damien himself was very disappointed with the production on dublin town and it did not sound or appear as he would have liked, this single was produced back in 1997 or thereabouts and from then til the seize the day album he was trying to reinvent himself after the dublin town single.
His own influences range from luke kelly, shane macgowan and bob marley.he has recieved much support in his endeavours from shane, sinead o connor and christy moore who are all big fans.

the most distinctive aspect about him is his writing on contemporary issues in ireland which also marked shane out in his london of late 70s and 80s. he has penned songs about: the heroin epidemic in dublin 'ghosts of overdoses',the effects of industrial school nightmare 'industrial school', his inner city childhood 'factories',the evils of imperialism 'colony', social inequality in ireland 'celtic tiger'.when in concert he sings these songs very powerfully, intensely and it is so refreshing to see a singer writing his own meaningful socially aware songs compared to the many artists who are going through the motions just tryin to sell albums while singing about relationships or whatever eg. paddy casey mundy and the likes.
if he is in your area he is well worth a view and i dont thinh you will be disappointed as for the voice it is his own natural acccent and in no way contrived!

Are you his agent, Ned Kelly?

I do agree with that, but still the realisation and voice simply don't do it for me. I've tried Factories and Marching and both come across as a bit contrived, irritating and simply boring - sorry. My loss, I am sure.
