Rebel Music

Post Fri Jun 02, 2006 2:18 am

Anyone else like the Irish rebel stuff?

Obv the Wolfe Tones ahve gotta be recognised for writing a lot of stuff, but really I'm yet to find anyone better than gary/eire óg. Although I prefer Irish Brigade's version of Wille & Danny.

Care to recommend anyone? I've got/heard quite a bit from Shebeen (tho the guy seems to be trying too hard and ends up sounding real strained), Eire Og, Gary Og, Irish Brigade, Wolfetones, Charlie & The Bhoys and Athenrye.

I'd love to see a live gig from any of them but I don't think much goes in here in London (in terms of irish rebel music...).

By mistake I found myself in a pub listening to this Shebeen it was awful. Pure awful. They were from Scotland down in London in a celtic bar. Celtic were playing during the day to which I was in the pub for. Shebeen started the night off with some classics and then it turned wrong. The lead singer thought he was Anto from the Chillis up on the drums with his hand on his heart! It was a dreadful sight it was weird, although they werent saying it - it was like KILL THE ENGLISH! myself and my company left after our drinks were finished. :)

Let me feel a doubt. It was not awful enough if you bothrered to finish your drinks first. The Real Awfulness (with capital "R" and "A") would make you leave drinks unfinished. The band should perfect themselves...

lol, I sort of presumed that Shebeen were just let down by poor quality equipment, since I'd only ever heard recordings. Thanks for the confirmation though :P

The only song I've liked of their's has been 'Disband The RUC'. Coincidentaly, I havn't heard versions by anyone else - so maybe it's lack of comparison :D

i don't give much of a crap about foreign political history and terrorists can suck me off.

Coincidentally, a good friend of mine and a fantastic Irish singer by the name of Martin, gave me a copy of Éire Óg Live at The Brazen Head on Sunday past. They sounded like a lively bunch of lads, obviously playing to a largely sympathetic and like-minded audience. Lucky feckers.
For my money, I love the album '1798 - The First Year of Liberty' by Frank Harte and Donal Lunny, now that album kicks arse in the most understated and subtle of manners. It is available, amongst other fine retailers, from Christy Moore's website, and I love it. A brilliant collection of rebel songs from the '98.

Ahhh. There is hope for the future!

you misunderstood my point.

i'm an american. irish politics shouldn't be off much concern to me. sure ireland has crapped out some great music, but i'm not gonna go around upping the IRA. i think it's important to understand basic history, geography, etc. it's just a waste of grey matter to get all psyched about outdated irish rebel rhetoric when i could be reading about something more important like pol pot or the aids pandemic or what not.

therefore, rebel music rots your brain!
