Couldn't agree more, Mats. :shock:WTF, indeed

Good production values though - at least, judging by the snippet I heard before my teeth caught fire, my eyebrows began fighting like acid-crazed caterpillars, and my blood-shot eyes retracted down into my armpits to protect themselves... I have a long history with 'country music' you see, tracing back to when I was frightened by a string tie as a small boy.

Seeing pics of Santa and Frosty on the cover should serve as a warning.

Some comments about Ronan Keating´s cover of FONY that I found on a Kirsty MacColl web site.

Nothing the matter with what the great Doug Sahm called "real country music", but Country 'n' Irish is a whole nother matter. I thought we shot that dog in 1972. Clearly its ghost has come back to haunt us. Ronan's remains the worst however. Thomas and Fhiona are merely observing the rituals of their tribe and in that, at least, there is a modicum of sincerity.

Why did you actually ever give rights to Ronan Keatin to do the song?

We didn't. Once you have recorded a piece, there's very little you can do to stop someone else recording a cover. They may not change it without your permission or precedent. The "precedent" for Ronan's lyric improvement was the 1991 TOTP appearance by Shane and Kirsty. Neither of them had the stomach to fight for the original lyrics on the day, for whatever reason. Shane had left the Pogues by then. We would never have allowed the change, as we illustrated in the farrago around the Jonathan Ross Show last year, where the producers unsuccessfully tried to invoke the 1991 "precedent". We, in turn, argued that the Pogues as a whole had not created the precedent and if they wanted the Pogues on the show, they were going to have the honour our version.

Shane and Jem do, yes. The rest of us only collect royalties on Pogues versions.

There remain only two good covers of FoNY - the spoken word version and the No Use For A Name version, because they both do something new with the song. To which I would probably add Brendan Bowyer and Aisling Bowyer's version, although that sticks more closely to our blueprint. And I don't get paid royalties on any of these versions either.

I think the NUFAN version is quite good yeah but what do you think of that version by Mark Porter: it's a bit like a big band version
