Seem to be hearing alot from Port Isaacs Fishermans Friends, could be flavour of the month. It is well done and all but think it lacks the real power the song deserves.Put your back into it.Can not help think of the winter sweets when I hear the band name.

Agreed. And the reviewer of their album in the Guardian, Robin Denselow, agreed too: "They try hard to have fun, but it's a bit plodding and respectful: listening to their version of South Australia made me turn to the Pogues..."

There's apparently a big deal to make a movie out of their story too now.
Anyway, might see them sometime over the summer. Then again, might not.

The Guardian also listed Richard Thompson on Rogue's Gallery as a much better option.Have that cd somewhere so may give it another listen.Had a quick look at some of their older stuff on youtube, they look a lot more polished now .I suspect someone in the record company is working on image in a big way.Can imagine seeing them live would be a totaly different experence.

It's not at all bad, that Rogue's Gallery collection, even though it does have Sting on it. Thompson's Mingulay Boat Song I think it was that the Guardian mentioned. It's pretty good. With Pogues reference, on that cd there's also a version of Greenland Whale Fisheries by Van Dyke Parks, though (with respect to this thread) I haven't found it in a (free) downloadable version. Trouble is with covers of songs the Pogues have done, nobody does it better...

The Fisherman's Friends lot are playing a festival that we'll go to, assuming we can get tickets. But I'll see who's on the other stage before I decide whether to see them.

Damn. There's a live version if you want to check that out which is probably more widely viewable. And actually it might be better.

I think 'South Australia' was a sea shanty...The Dubliners used to do a version with Barney McKenna?...banjo player...doing the vocals..it's on youtube anyway.

Not yet up but soon To celebrate DMs 50th Anniversary, DMs asked 10 artists to record their version of a cult classic track which represents the spirit of the people who've worn DM's over the past 50 years. DMs also asked 10 directors to make videos for each of the tracks. Listen and watch here

That camera captured the most perfect slice of life. Good version of IISFFGWG though.
