The Hogs

Post Sat Apr 29, 2006 6:51 pm

I’ve come across this Irish band by chance, upon learning that they would be playing in Czechia in summer. Their website isn’t exactly rich in info, but among the few things one can find there is this one: The Hogs have appeared in Hotpress magazine several times and Michael [Casey] also has been reviewed in Irish music magazine for his rendition of "Shane", a song he wrote for and about Shane MacGowan. Anybody knows anything more about this?

The Hogs play Irish trad (listing The Pogues as their influence no.1) and sound as a quite fun band. Six full-length songs can be downloaded here (the downloads even seem legal as they appear on the official website of the agency that arranges the band’s Czech gigs :-)).

Thanks Zuzana. I take it you'll be going to see them? Think we should book them as a suport act for next years' tour?

Zuzana,

I know Michael "Hog" Casey well. He released a cd a few years ago with a band called "Duchas". He wrote a song about Shane and Tipperary. I have the cd in a box "somewhere". I'll look it up tomorrow.

Thanks, Noel! It would be great to learn what the "mysterious" song is about. :) Btw, I enjoyed The Hogs tracks and I'll surely try to catch up with them when they come to our lands.

You don't read every single post that appears at Medusa? Really shocking. ;)

Zuzanna. I think I am too late with these dates. The next time they are in the Czech Republic I will make sure there are tickets at the door for you..

And a backstage pass? ;)
Thanks, Noel! It's a bit strange to imagine them playing with the Czech songwriter Koubek - he plays slowish weepy stuff, while what I heard by the Hogs was lively, energetic Irish music. Hopefully they managed to "infect" him with their vigour. :)

Zuzana

I was telling Michael of your interest. Here is part of an email he sent me today.

*********

I'll send you the full june tour information sometime this week as it'll be gettin sent to me and then you can pass it on to Zuzana
What I can tell you for definite is that we are headin over to the Czech Republic on the 12 of june, our first gig is in the town where they brew their most famous Czech beer called Pilsner. So the first gig is on the 13 june in Pilsner. I also can tell you that our mega, hog, night for the new c.d launch is in Prague and on saturday 23 june and coinciding with a huge festival called "United Islands of Prague festival" so it's gonna be a big hogging, cunting night by all accounts!
I'll send you the full gig itinerary sometime this week and you can give it to Zuzana.
We're doin a 2 week tour in august as well and another 2 week tour in november (also gonna be on Czech t.v with Vaclav Koubek)

Thanks a lot for the info, Noel!! Very much appreciated. I’ll definitely try to catch at least some gig – the "big hogging night" in Prague sounds great. :)
Looking forward to the full itinerary. My best regards and thanks to Michael – and I hope they’ll enjoy the tasty Pilsner beer. ;)
