after an indepth argument with a friend of mine i'm curious about a question. are flogging molly a very good rip off of the pogues or would you call them a particularly original band

I like Flogging Molly, but I wouldn't say that they were a very good rip off of The Pogues, just an average one.

I'm getting quite annoyed by people who always judge bands like that. Who of you have ever seen the band live? Do the Pogues have those great electrical guitar solos Dennnis does? Ddid you ever hear a fiddle in the Pogues? There's loads of differences. Sure they influenced them but so did Johnny Cash.

I like the band and the music, and sure I also see comparisons and know that they will never be as great as the Pogues but I also feel a Flogging Molly gig is totally different.

I've never seen Flogging Molly live but I hear they are quite good. I have a couple of their albums and certainly they have unique aspects that distiguish them from the Pogues. But everytime I listen to them I can not help thinking that they decided they could borrow heavily from the Pogues and have some success with it, especially considering the Pogues had stopped recorded and touring regularly. I don't think there is necesarily anything wrong with it but despite the differences I don't think that they could be considered "particularly original" either. I don't mean this in a judgmental way, but more of a perception of where they fit in the musical canon.

My opinion of whether they're average or very good is a judgment. I think their songwriting and production pales in comparison.

Okay I agree it's not Shane but Dave wrote some good songs as well, but I wouldn't call them average. Have you ever heard my band? Now that's average

I am willing to raise my rating on Molly from Average to Good.

Finnegan's Lads is easily the best folkrock band from the Netherlands I have ever heard.

they're not all that much like the pogues, but they're not that original either.

I have their latest album, which I quite enjoy. I'll never sit down and play it on repeat and try to discover every nuance of the music, because they're simply not that mindblowingly great. If I get the chance, I will go and see them in concert (but I guess that doesn't mean much coming from me, I'm a concert junkie).

I don't think you can call any artist original. All artists get their ideas, music, inspiration from something. And Flogging Molly is just Flogging Molly. You could call them a rip-off if you wanted, but then you could call the Sex Pistols a rip off of the New York Dolls, or Jerry Lee Lewis a rip off of Elvis. Neither would exsist without the other that influenced them.

Me too. And I'm normally very picky when it comes to voices.

It annoys me a bit too sometimes. Some good tunes though.
