This is a video comparing the Pogues' "Turkish Song of the Damned" to Flogging Molly's "Another Bag of Bricks". You be the judge - have they borrowed from The Pogues or not? Funny thing is that it´s the video to Waxie´s Dargle and the music to "Turkish"
There´s also another one comparing The Pogues' "Fiesta" to Flogging Molly's "Sentimental Johnny".

Sentimental Johnny is heinously flagrant. The only song Flogging Molly uses horns on and the intro is note for note. Still, it/both is/are (a) good song(s).

i second this. i dig flogging molly, but i think the pogues comparrisons are way overdone, good or bad. this is a very electric guitar & fiddle-driven band. where's the similarity there?

i also agree that everyone should get off the "originality" trip. flogging molly owes much to the pogues who owe much to the dubliners who owe much to any number of folks. shane owes much to brendan behan (pardon my spelling). the question is, are they any GOOD? i think they are. great players, some great songs. getting better as they go along too. great live band, as well, which is a good test.

flogging molly rip off the pogues without any acknowledgment. the pogues cover dubliners songs and sing with them. flogging molly are a bunch of fucking cunts who pretend to be the pogues to a load of punk kids. yes flogging molly play cheesey punk music with even more cheesey traditional irish riffs which after a while bores me to the bone. still if they are in town they are worth a look cos they are better than allot of other shite which i wont go into.

You can call it "ripping off", you can call it "taking inspiration from". You can call it "pretense", you can call it "making music which they like". If you opt for the former, nobody pushes you to listen to the "f*****g c***s", right?

As for acknowledgement - how many pop/rock bands should endlessly express their thankfulness to the Beatles for example? Yes, FM were undoubtedly inspired by the Pogues - and so what? At least they had a good source of inspiration and they keep the "Poguesque" music alive. Yes, they sometimes obviously borrow from Pogues songs - I guess Another Bag Of Bricks really borrowed the melody from Turkish Song Of the Damned. But so did White City borrowed the melody from Curragh Of Kildare. And would you blame the Pogues for ripping off trad songs and not taking off their hats to the great Mr Trad every time they play them?

I think that Flogging Molly are a great band to listen to. They've built theyr own style, when you listen to a song by FM you wouldn't confuse 'em with the Pogues or the DKM or whatever...and that's a thing that only bands of a certain weight achieve.
And apart that, they've done two or three (I've not yet decided about the last) great cd's, great quality and great songs.
