Christine, Shepherds Bush Empire has Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan listed for 23rd Jan, which is the same date as on WEW's list. But if you check Isobel Campbell's website at http://www.isobelcampbell.com/live.php their other tour dates are also the same as William's. So my guess would be that he's supporting them. Might be worth phoning the Empire to check.

That's great sleuthing, firehazard, many thanks. I'll ring them and report back.

Esther, are these dates still on? I can't find anything on the Shepherds Bush site. I have only just started listening, and what a voice! I'd love to catch him over here. Thanks!

Christine, I do know that Will is soon bound overseas, though just for a week's worth of dates. I think firehazard is correct that he is opening for Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, but were I you, I'd check with the venues to be sure. That was the talk at Christmastime.

None of those say "San Francisco, CA." How does he expect me to see him?

It's just crazy talk.

San Francisco: March 23rd.
More US dates have just been posted : http://www.southern.com/southern/tour/WILEW

Well, yes, please do make a purchase.

I'm surprised at myself that I'd not mentioned this. Hallways of Always is an EP (10"/CD), recorded and produced by another of my nephews, Luke Tweedy (the artist who created the sculptures gracing the covers of Will's three Southern releases.) This recording is a collaboration with Jenny Hoyston of Erase Errata and Paradise Island. More info at: http://www.southern.com/southern/band/WEWJH/28136.php .

Three of the six tracks are duets. The first two are songs written by Jenny and have a much different sound than fans are accustomed to, but I like them very much. Track 3 is Will's Black Iowa Dirt, which is generally his closing tune in these parts, and a real crowd favorite. Track 4 is solo Jenny about her father's death, I think, and track 5 is a duet of Will's Marrow, which is an old song that is much improved with a female voice. I think it is the highlight of the record. The final track is an instrumental. You can listen to blurbs of the songs at Amazon.

The lady at the box office only now confirmed that yes, indeed, he is supporting Campbell / Lanegan tonight and should be on stage around 8pm. They hadn't a clue until this afternoon who'd be the opening act.

Unfortunately it is sold out but you might be lucky anyway.

Ah, that's a shame you missed out on tickets, Christine. Lack of communication between venue and promoter, I guess. It always surprises me when venues don't know who the support act is going to be, but I suppose by now it shouldn't. I reckon they could have sold a good few tickets on the strength of Wiliam performing, but then again if they've sold out anyway it won't matter to them.

Though it's not yet listed on Will's tour dates, he will be opening for the North Mississippi All Stars for a few shows in April (Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee.): http://www.nmallstars.com/tour-dates.shtml

North Mississippi All Stars... there's a band I haven't listened to for a while. Might just have to go and find the CDs now.

Any news of Will crossing the Atlantic anytime, Esther? I was wondering whether he'd be likely to play any of the summer festivals over here.

ya jammy bastid! Enjoy the show.

We trekked out to the south side of San Francisco in October and caught Will E Whit at a small club between Pogues shows. The man's got some soul. I've got 'blackbird' in heavy rotation in the car CD player, and some incentive to dust off that banjo sitting in the corner...

cheers

That particular evening I was seriously working drive times in my head - "He's opening down there. Probably done by 8:00 or 8:30. Then I drive like an idiot to the Fillmore. Pogues on around 9:15. Hmm. Assuming smooth traffic and no problems parking ... Hmmm."

Ultimately I decided it was too big a risk and didn't try to catch 'em both on the same night. But later that evening I ran into WEW in the balcony. It was then that I learned of his and Esther's relationship.

Dude! I get to see WEW on Friday! w00t!

I've not talked to Will since he left on tour a few weeks ago. At that time, there were no plans for crossing the Atlantic. If I learn otherwise, I'll be sure to tell you.
