Boys & Bhoys From the County Hell

There's a Pogues cover band out of Cleveland, Ohio, that I think has been mentioned on this site from time to time called "The Boys From the County Hell."

I've seen them a bunch of times -- really good stuff. At any rate ... I ran across an interview on Public Radio with a few tunes from a couple years back -- check it out:

Is this that Pogues cover band with the McKean brothers (GC5) and Ryan Foltz (ex-DKM)?

Ah yes they are :) Thanks for the link.

That presenter has the most grating voice I've ever heard

I've heard better, there's a band here called The Rogues (from Dundalk) have a great sound.

They are really weak... they even make mistakes in the lyrics... and the singer has really a poor voice.

We have one Pogues cover band in Québec, Canada called the "Lazy Drunken Bastards" and they are way better!

Bad vocals. No energy. Doesn't sound like the Pogues. Just a bad arse pub band.[/b]

I have to give them some credit. They are doing this for fun and that is what I think playing music should be, right? Besides, no band really sounds their best playing in any kind of radio studio. There is no room to play, you feel cramped and therefore you don't give it your ALL. The energy is lost. I would like to hear them live in a pub somewhere.

If I'm not mistaken, The Boys From The County Hell are members of cleveland punk band The GC5. They've also backed Spider on a couple of his solo dates, I think.

I like it!

No, it's not a dead on impression but it shouldn't be. It's faithful to the spirit of the Pogues. Streams of Whiskey has a few twists that I really liked. As cover bands go there's not a thing wrong with these guys.

I think they're ok. I prefer this to bands like DKM and Flogging Molly- if you're gonna try and copy the Pogues then you may as well try and make it as faithful to the original as you can.

I kind of know where people are coming from with this train of thought, but I've gotta say I have pretty much a complete collection of both Pogues and DKM (amongst a whole world of Irish/Celtic stuff), and I don't really see that DKM are somehow 'copying' The Pogues directly, apart from the bleedingly obvious cultural thematic similarities.

The DKM are great fun to listen to and watch, but to me their music is very young, brash, American punk of a very different flavour to the smokey, mellowed, sonic-texturally-lush, European, ThreepennyOpera-esque vibe of The Pogues. Maybe it's just me. Like 'em both, just in different ways.

But as a musician, I must say, it would be awful to be playing a genre of music that you really like, and be constantly judged as being unworthy of comparison to said genres fabled progenitors. Or something. :)

I play with an irish band calls 'Bhoys From The County Hell'. We're the only full line-up pogues cover act that I know of out there. There's some audio clips and pics on our webpage - http://www.thepoguestribute.ie. Drop by and let us know what you think.

Cheers,

Mick.
