Those were some nights for a gradually ageing couple !!!
Last Thursday (Feb. 14) brought the best PaddyPunk band of Holland to my hometown Delft: CIRCLE J. Pitty that only me and my missus were genuinely impressed by that, but the band was not taken out and played a fine set anyway.
Than, for something else, Friday- and Saturdaynight brought loads of bluesbands to Delft, for the annual bluesfestival, with at least twenty odd bars hosting live music. Great stuff, my only wish being that they'd started doing an Irish Music Festival too, like the city of Deventer does.
And than, to top it off, we went to Mr. Irish Bastard and The Tossers for two consecutive nights. Both bands were great on both nights, though too few were around to share the fun and joy, perhaps a 150 on Sunday in Tilburg and a 100 on Monday in Utrecht (maybe not the best nights for scheduling gigs). For us, Sunday was THE BEST by far, seeing our friends from Mr Irish Bastard (their cd has been my missus's favorite for quite a while) again, opening up for The Tossers. Both bands played convincingly and enthousiastically. The Tossers played a rather lengthy set, including loads of my personal favourites from their repertoire, among which No loot, no booze, no fun. Along the way, they picked up some traditionals and a Pogues song (Turkish Song of the Damned). The set was brought to a close by their great version of Parting Glass, vocal and fiddle only. Yet during the glasses prior to that one, there was much to enjoy too. Their whistle player makes it no secret who his personal hero is (Spider), his brother the frontman appeared a bit out of it between songs, but sang and played with great energy and dedication. The lady on the fiddle was the most lively of the pack. What added to the fun greatly was meeting up with two of the three guys I'd traveled to Ireland with to see the Pogues play Belfast and Dublin. Regettably, the fourth crew member, good old Micky Molloy, was in bed with a flu and couldn't make it ... take care Mick !!
Monday was great, really, but I guess we were running out of energy a bit. What made it wonderful was that The Tossers weren't too tired to mix with the audience afterwards for drinks and talks.
So very very enjoyable altogether.
