Is it just me, or is there no other band like the Pogues? Every comparison Ive gotten is to some little punk child's band who turns their amps up to 11 and thinks their cool...and it aint so. Are their any bands that truely have a similar sound - not just bands that are Irish and covered a Pogues tune, but something really similar. No punk reccomendations either - I dont even consider that crap music.

The Men they Couldn't Hang (albums Silvertown and Domino Club) and Oysterband (album Holy Bandits) Are probably good ones to check out, non punk bands that have a poguesy feel to them. (ie, playing rockin music with mostly traditional instruments!)

The best band that I can really think of who combine very good song writing like the pogues, with an eclectic mix of music like the pogues, at least for their first album, is a group someone recommended to me years ago. That's Firewater. Their first album so far has been the best IMO, and it's klezmer rock.

IMO, no other band really satisfies the way the Pogues do/did. Some come close, but in most cases, something gets lost in the translation.

The original incarnation of Blood or Whiskey (?) was great, and simmilar, but not the pogues. The Mahones are great, and on the first album, finny might kinda sound like Shane, but the songwriting isn't really there. In comparison, neither of them share the eclecticism of the Pogues (on album anyway).

I haven't listened to much of the other irish bands that people often recommend. A lot of them are very traditional. And though I love trad. music, there's a lot of it to wade through, some better than others...a lot better.

fair enough...i guess im comparing pogues with too much of U.S. punk, haha. Thank you all very much for the tips, I will slowly go about checking them all out....that was exactly what I was looking for.

I havn't actually heard any of The Men They Couldn't Hang songs but i have heard only good about them.

I think the Flogging Molly are worth a mention, not as traditional as The Pogues and a bit more rockier they are still good.

And how can you go past The Dubliners...they are excellent, my favorite Dubliners song is McAlpine's Fusiliers.
