Hmm. I don't see how it can sound anything like Metallica's then.

Of course, neither the Thin Lizzy, nor Metallica versions, are a patch on The Dubliners version...

As I already announced:

Hello FM Faithful.

We are saddened to announce that Matt Hensley will no longer be touring with Flogging Molly. We fully support Matt and his decision and wish him nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors. Matt has written a letter to you, the fans, as he wanted to share his very personal reasons for his departure and to let you know how grateful he is for your years of support.

First let me say that it has been an honor to play with Flogging Molly for the last 10 years. I would have never thought that playing the accordion, an instrument that almost got me shot when I first was learning, would have led me down a road to Molly Malone's, Dave King, and an extended family called Flogging Molly. I have been blessed to be so lucky. I am writing this to tell you that I am leaving the band. This decision was not easy for me. I have an eight year old son Oliver who is becoming a little man, and the feeling that he needs his old man around is becoming too strong for me to ignore. The older my son gets the harder it is for me to leave him behind to go out on tour. Flogging Molly, as you know, is a hard working band that tours most of the year; I would never try to change that. I must follow my guts and step down. I'm departing the band but I will never leave what Flogging Molly has meant to the fans and myself. I look forward to playing on some songs when the band is in San Diego.

I would like to thank all the loyal Flogging Molly fans for the support that you have given throughout the years. It has been a privilege to play music for you. I would also like to thank all the service men and women who have supported the band, may you keep out of harms way. I would like to thank all the bands that let Flogging Molly open for them and all the bands that opened for Flogging Molly. I'd like to thank all the friends and families who have lost someone and feel a little closer to them during IF I EVER LEAVE THIS WORLD ALIVE - I know how you feel, my mom would get nearer every time I played it.

Keep the faith

Matt Hensley

What a superb letter! As a father of two young children I fully understand his thinking - I'm only surprised he didn't do it earlier. I wonder if thy'll replace him? All the best to you Mr. H.

Yeah, I'm on their mailing list so I got that letter. i don't really follow much where band members live but i gather from the note that he lives in San Diego. How cool would it be if he were my neighbor? maybe i've passed him walking my dogs...

Rock n Reel

Post Fri Jan 19, 2007 4:05 pm

This may well have been posted before but just in case ... I bought the new issue of Rock n Reel yesterday and there is a Flogging Molly interview. The journo Sean McGhee refers to "their groundbreaking fusion of super-charged thrash punk and Irish folk" and prods Dave King on the influence of the Pogues:

"Like so many bands fusing Irish traditional - based music with rock, FM are often tarred with the 'sounds like the Pogues' brush by lazy journalists, especially in Europe although, interestingly, a large percentage of the FM audience weren't even born at the height of the aforementioned punk-folk act's height.

"You're right there but I think it's just laziness and ignorance" (Dave King)

It's a moot point but perhaps if the Pogues hadn't existed Molly might have been compared to the Horslips.

"I love Horslips and of course bands like the Dubliners ... When people are writing about us or reviewing te albums they tend to compare us to the Pogues becasue they don't really know any more than that. We're a lot different lyrically and, in reality, it's a completely different ballgame. Was it an influence? Of course it was, as was Johnny Cash. As a point of reference, and if it helps people grasp a little where we're coming from, that's okay."

The interview is accompanied by a picture of the band in docs and suits.

I will not comment on this but will be interested to hear what the rest of you think.

Cheers, shipbuilder.

P.s There is a good interview in there with Shane as well but it's very old.

Dave King really pisses me off. Blind ingnorance. The Pogues invented Irish punk rock, hence any band doing that kind of music, even the band that I'm trying to get going owes their debt to the Pogues, enough said.

If you read carefully, Dave King isn't saying the Pogues weren't an influence, but they were just one of many.

I agree that he doesn't give them enough creedance, though.

What annoys me the most is that Metallica credit Thin Lizy as the sole creator of the song. The song has what... 100-200 years? And their version is shit anyway. Thin Lizy sounds alright though.

Well, i think the author of the song is "traditional", so by crediting Thin Lizzy, they are saying they are using Thin Lizzy's arrangement of the song, which they clearly are (minus the soul, of course). It is also paying homage, i imagine, to Thin Lizzy as an influence, and probably also their first point of contact with the song (it was mine too!) This is also a legal issue, as it means royalty $ goes to Thin Lizzy, in some way or other, rather than claim the arrangment as their own & keep the royalties.
