Flogging Molly chat to ilikemusicI Like Music, UK - 7 Nov 2008Full URLThis Irish American Celtic punk seven piece have been capturing the world's attention since 1997. In March 2008 they released their fourth studio album Float, their first album recorded in Ireland. It was championed by both fans and critics alike and continued to prove that their trademark technique of putting traditional Irish folk music through the punk rock blender will happily fill up the stomachs of their very loyal fan base.
Currently headlining The Eastpak Antidote Tour, with support from the likes of Skindred and Street Dogs, Flogging Molly are taking Europe by storm once again. ilikemusic caught up with lead vocalist Dave King to chat about playing live, memorable gigs in Ireland's Dalymont Park and why the audience always makes him feel at home, wherever he happens to be.
"I Like Music because… it should and always will break down barriers. When times are hard, like they are now, at least we can take our minds off things for an hour and a half at a live show. Music should be live." DAVE KING, FLOGGING MOLLY
ILM: Flogging Molly are currently on The Eastpak Antidote tour. How have the first few gigs been? Dave: They've been great. We started off in Newcastle and we played Glasgow, which is always amazing. We're in London tonight. Good old Astoria!
ILM: There are a lot of dates on this tour, how do teh pressures of such a big tour take their toll on you? Dave: It is a lot of dates, yeah. But we're pretty used to that. Plus Europe is a great place to play because you know; it's a different city every day. And you're in the city, you're not in the middle of nowhere, so you can go on a little walkabout and find a little restaurant or something like that to eat and relax!
ILM: What do you look forward to the most about playing live? Dave: The anticipation is always nerve-racking. But, for example, in Glasgow a few nights ago, a crowd can really make you feel at home. They really can. No matter where you are in the world. Glasgow definitely did that. We're looking forward to playing places like London and Birmingham.
ILM: Do you have a song that you particularly enjoy playing live at the moment? Dave: When you do a set like we do, they all have their own little space. The all have their own energy and they're all completely different. It's always good to play newer songs, like songs from Float. They seem to go down really well with the crowd. That's great.
ILM: Do you play around with your live set? Or do you change it each night? Dave: We do chop it up a bit. But, the thing is, when something flows really well you can just feel it. All of the songs that we're playing live right now, in our opinion, definitely work.
ILM: Your latest album, Float did incredibly well. What is the Flogging Molly process of making music? Dave: Usually when we're on the road, we're so busy that it is very hard to pick up a guitar, just for the recreation aspect of it. So, you come up with some ideas when you go into the studio to record. Then, when you go back home, when you have some time off, you usually have some more ideas. But then there are seven of us in the band. The only advice I could give to anybody in a band with that many people in it, is make sure you have an idea before you all sit down together. It really helps the focus. When you have seven different opinions, all on an idea you already have, that's what makes it Flogging Molly!
ILM: What would your advice be to anyone getting into the music industry from being in such a successful band as Flogging Molly? Dave: Just be yourself. Especially with a major label, it is very easy to get whipped up in the moment. You can really lose your whole identity. Flogging Molly never lost that. We've always done it our way and that was it, you know? I mean our record company, they finance what we do, they support what we do, they promote what we do, but they don't tell us what to do!
ILM: What moments stand out for you when you look back over your career so far? Dave: Looking at Obama's victory speech, I mean, we just played that same field a couple of months ago! There's so many apsects....you know...um...Just to see people's reactions to our music! That is the most overwhelming thing of all. When you're tired of travelling that's the one thing that keeps you going!
ILM: What's one of the best gigs you've ever seen? Dave: As a young kid I saw Thin Lizzy in Dalymount Park. That is one gig that I remember being unbelievable, it was incredible. I also got to see Bob Marley at Dalymount Park as well, which was incredible. There has been a few, you know! I also used to go and see a band in Ireland called Horslips as well, who were one of the first bands of their time to be mixing traditional music with the music of the day. They were always incredible!
ILM: What are you listening to at the moment? Dave: Speaking of live music, I live in Ireland and I got a chance to go and see The Raconteurs. They were absolutley phenomenal. Bands like that, I love that!
