Andy Irvine and Paul Brady

Post Thu Aug 10, 2006 11:15 pm

For a start this is the best irish-folk album ever, which reminds me that I must get it again immediately. On this album is the definitive version of Arthur McBride, which tells the story of some fine irish lads being accosted by a recruiting sergeant on christmas day.

I don't know what it is about being english, but somehow I always love the songs where the english are being complete bastards. I think it's because I think nationalism is, at the basis, a bit silly. What matters to me is what the leaders do, not which particular place that middle-aged man was born.

Anyway, get Paul Brady and Andy Irvine,

i love that one too. i'll have to seek out a copy of this. i have a planxty bootleg from 1975 with what i consider to be the definitive version of "arthur mcbride", sung by johnny moynihan (with andy, liam & paul brady).

Celtic were playing during the day to which I was in the pub for. Shebeen started the night off with some classics and then it turned wrong. The lead singer thought he was Anto from the Chillis up on the drums with his hand on his heart! It was a dreadful sight it was weird, although they werent saying it - it was like KILL THE ENGLISH! myself and my company left after our drinks were finished. :)
You must be deaf,Shebeen are one of the best bands around

TOSCS,

Yes they do still play, but the group has split into 2 factions.

As I understand it, one version has one of the Warfield brothers on his own and the second version has the other brother with musicians from the band.Apparently the 2 Warfields fell out big time.
